Clara Viana, new dean of the Faculty of Law

Clara Viana Ballester is the new dean of the Faculty of Law of the Universitat de València. She replaces Javier Palao, whose two mandates have already expired. The School Board has chosen her in the first call with 40 votes in favour and 16 abstentions.

Clara Viana Ballester earned her doctorate in law and alicenciatura(former Spanish undergraduate degree) in criminology from the Universitat de València, where she won an extraordinary award in each category. She has been an associateprofessor of criminal law for twenty years (4 five‑year teaching periods) and has received two excellent ratings at the advanced level of the Docentia programme. She has also completed one six-year research period. Her doctoral thesis is published in the Monograph Collection of the Spanish Congress of Deputies, titledInmunidades e Inviolabilidades: naturaleza jurídica y concepción dogmática. Especial referencia a la inviolabilidad parlamentaria(Immunities and inviolabilities: legal nature and dogmatic conception. Special reference to parliamentary inviolability) (2011).

Viana belongs to the Research Group reference GIUV2017-382 on "Modern trends in Criminal Law and Criminology: Crime Prevention and protection of civil liberties". She did a research mobility in the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Crime, Security and Law in Freiburg and in the Paris-Panthéon-Assas University. Her lines of research include personal grounds for exemption from criminal liability (personal-functional guarantees), authorship and content on the Internet, the legal consequences of crime and criminal enforcement, specifically the measure of probation. She has been a member of several research projects funded by national, autonomic and university public institutions. During 2018 and 2019 she was Principal Investigator of an R+D+I granted by the Valencian Government for emerging groups titled "Libertad Vigilada: fundamentos político-criminales y aplicación práctica" (Probation: political-criminal foundations and practical application). Since 2021 she is co-PI of the State Plan of Research titled “La erosión del principio de legalidad en el sistema de justicia penal contemporáneo: diagnóstico y propuestas de solución” (Erosion of the principle of legality in the contemporary criminal justice system: diagnosis and solution proposals) (R+D+I PID2021-123441NB-I00, funded by MCIN/AEI/ 10.13039/501100011033 and by “ERDF A way of making Europe”.)

Since her beginnings as a lecturer at the University of Alacant, where she was a TeachingAssistant (Organic Law of Universities) for five years, she has been very committed to teaching and to educational innovation, participating as a member and in the management and coordination of various projects and innovation networks, both at the University of Alacant and the Universitat de València. She has coordinated 7 projects and is a member of another 8. Nowadays, she is a coordinator in the Educative Innovation Group, registered in the Record of Consolidated Teaching Innovation Groups of the Universitat de València, called “Penal en Vena” (ref. GCID23_2589092, PevUV) and co-coordinator of the established innovation project “Materiales multimedia para la docencia y el aprendizaje del Derecho Penal” (Multimedia materials for the training and learning of criminal law).

She has taught in the undergraduate degrees in Law and Criminology, as well as in the double degrees in Law-Business Management and Administration and Law-Criminology. She has also taught in the Master's Degree in Corporate Law (Commercial, Labour and Tax Consultancy) and in the Master's Degree in Criminal Safeguards and Socio-Economic Crimes. Additionally, she has directed several Master’s Degree Final Project (TFM) in the Master's Degree in Criminology and Security and the Master’s Degree in Criminal Safeguards and Socio-Economic Crimes.

Her experience in university management in a statutory single-person position dates back to 2012, when she was appointed Deputy Secretary of the Faculty of Law. She currently holds the position of Secretary of the faculty since January 2016. Viana is the Secretary of the Academic Committee for Qualifications in the Degrees of Law, Criminology and PoliticalSciences and Administration, and of the Centre Board of the Faculty of Law. She is also a member of the Quality Committee, the Internship Committee, and the Committee 2 of the Temporary teaching positions selection of the Faculty of Law, among other collegial bodies. In the past few years, she has taken part as a member in several committees for the selection of permanent positions (CDr. and PPL). Moreover, she is an elected member in the FacultyBoard and in the Universitat de València’s Senate.
