Conference by Marta Macho and presentation of the RSME, on Monday, in the framework of the 50th anniversary of the studies of Mathematics

In the field of the celebration of the 50 years of the studies of Mathematics in Valencia, on Monday 12 December, professor Marta Macho will hold a conference titled ‘Las paradojas nos rodean: sorpresas para aprender’ (Paradoxes surround us: surprises to learn). Previously, the Real Sociedad Matemática Española (RSME) (Spanish Royal Mathematical Society) will be presented. The session will start at 11:30 in the graduate room of the Faculty of Mathematics of the UV.

The events are organised by the Real Sociedad Matemática Española, the Department of Mathematics and the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences of the UV.

Francisco Marcellán, professor of the Carlos III University of Madrid, will be in charge of presenting the Real Sociedad Matemática Española (RSME), the entity he leads. Marcellán’s intervention will begin at 11:30.

Then (at 12:30), Marta Macho Stadler, from the University of the Basque Country, will give her lecture. According to the lecturer, “paradoxes surround us: in our daily life we live with lots of contradictions, but they also exist –event if it seems estrange– in mathematics and science.” And she adds: “Paradoxes are surprising because they contradict what seems evident at first sight, but they are an excellent source of reflection and learning.” The conference wants to present some paradoxes originated by our ‘limited’ visual sense, of geometric type, caused by the infinite, motivated by a bad use of logics, of semantic character, caused by the vagueness of language or by a bad definition of fate.

Real Sociedad Matemática Española

At the end of 2015 the Real Sociedad Matemática Española (RSME) was created (http://rsme.es/). With the aim of making known the new team and the work plans, the RSME is organising presentations throughout the Spanish geography, so far being only presented in Málaga and Zaragoza. On this occasion, the presentation will be in Valencia, building on the celebrations of the 50 anniversary of the studies of Mathematics in the UV. Among the objectives of the RSME, promoting and disclosing Mathematics and encouraging its research is one of them, and an approach to society is fundamental.
