The University of Valencia and the Foundation for the Promotion of Health and Biomedical Research of the Valencian Community (Fisabio) have convened the VI edition of the video contest for young people “When I grow up, I want to be like...” with the aim of making women in science visible and promote scientific vocations. The submission period ends on December 11 and the 16,000 euros in prizes will be divided into 8 categories. Students of Secondary Education, Baccalaureate and Vocational Training can participate with videos of 3 minutes maximum.

In these videos, students must show the contribution of a woman or a group of women and their relevance or contribution to science and technology, and how this has improved the well-being or quality of life of citizens. Likewise, the impact that patriarchy has produced in the life and professional trajectory of these women must also be shown. These works can show a historical figure or current person, or a group of women.

The winning videos will be made public at a gala to be held around February 11, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

Regarding the conditions to participate in the VI edition of the video contest for young people “When I grow up, I want to be like...”, each educational centre can present as many videos as it wishes, and participation can be individual or in groups. In this second case, 10 is the maximum number of members per group, who will present themselves through the centre. In addition, the videos must respect anonymity, that is, they cannot include references to the names of the participating students or the educational centre.

As for the endowment, the total of 16,000 euros will be distributed among eight categories, in each of which 2,000 will be delivered. Of this amount, 1,000 euros will be allocated to the purchase of scientific and/or technological material by the centre of the members of the awarded video. The remaining €1,000 will go to the young people who have participated in the production of the winning videos and will also be used to purchase technological or educational material. The modalities of the prizes are the best script, the best audiovisual production, the most innovative video in the selection of the character and the public prize for the best video.

Among other objectives, this contest aims to make women and their achievements visible, and highlight the difficulties they encounter, consolidate in students the learning of the values on which the principle of equality is based or contribute to the creation and dissemination of female referents in science. It is also intended to cooperate in the success of basic skills, especially those related to research, communication and equality, or to overcome existing stereotypes that associate masculinity with knowledge possession.

This activity is part of the Dissemination Activities Plan of the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit co-funded by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology and the Ministry of Science and Innovation.
