The dissemination event “Science and Beers” deals with radiotracers, urban gardens, digital electronics and virtual reality in surgery

The event is organised by the University of Valencia (UV), the Foundation for the Promotion of Health and Biomedical Research of the Valencian Community (Fisabio), the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) and the Health Research Institute (INCLIVA).

Kike Nácher, a CISC researcher at the Institute of Corpuscular Physics (IFIC), will participate in this session, who in his talk “Studies with radiotracers: from the ocean to the crater of a volcano” will discuss radiotracers, radioactive calcium isotopes that allow us to know where This accumulates and makes it easier to investigate the synthesis of calcium carbonate in shells of molluscs or skeletons of corals in different aquariums and with different levels of acidity.

In recent months, within the framework of a collaboration between the CSIC and the University of Costa Rica, Kike Nácher and Mario Cubero, professor and researcher at the University of Costa Rica (UCR) respectively, have carried out a series of environmental studies and climate change using radiotracers. The objective is to identify concrete problems and be able to subsequently develop solutions and applied research.

Carlos Serra, from the UV’s University Institute for Social Welfare Policy Research (Polibienestar), will explain what social benefits urban gardens offer from the perspective of interdisciplinary research in the social sciences. In his talk “An urban garden makes you more human”, he will discuss possible nature-based solutions to climate change.

Andrés Macho, researcher at the PRL (Photonics Research Labs) of the iTeam (University Institute of Telecommunications and Multimedia Applications) will analyse digital electronics in the context of the information society. In his talk “The non-digital revolution” he will explore the consequences and possible solutions of this situation, which could imply a return to the “analogic” world.

María de la Iglesia Vayá and Kate Kardash, researchers from the Fisabio Mixed Biomedical Imaging Unit and the Príncipe Felipe Research Centre (CIPF), will make an approach to their latest study on software that uses virtual reality glasses to assist in surgeries of the lumbar spine. The talk is entitled “The metaverse of the lumbar spine at the service of surgery” and the prototype is being developed with the Hololens device (holographic device) that simulates a 3D model of the patient's spine in the same position as the real spine.
