In the past few months, the Universitat de València has contacted 13 Palestinian universities to express its solidarity in the face of the Israeli military intervention in Gaza and to offer the academic collaboration with the UV through collaboration agreements. An-Najah National University, Palestinian Ahliya University and Hebron University will be the first three universities to sign collaboration agreements with the Universitat de València following the Israeli military intervention in Gaza.

The GoverningCouncil has approved the required authorisation to sign these agreements on Tuesday, 28 May during its ordinary session. The previous procedures have already been completed, including the favourable report from the UV’s legal services.

The UV had a previous collaboration agreement with the An-Najah University between 1995 and 2020, which will now be renewed, as well as with the University of Palestine between 2013 and 2020. Both agreements were terminated due to a lack of activity back then.

On the instructions of UV President Mestre, the Office of the Vice-Principal for Internationalisation and Multilingualism initiated contact with 13 Palestinian universities. This was prompted by the Israeli military intervention in Gaza, which had been repeatedly condemned by the GoverningCouncil since October 2023 and according to the University Senate’s agreement on 22 February.

In these communications the university expressed its solidarity in the face of their difficult situation, since university buildings and facilities have been repeatedly affected by Israeli military actions, preventing the proper functioning of university activities.

The Universitat de València has established contact with the following universities: An-Najah National University, Hebron University, Palestine Ahliya University, Al-Aqsa University, Israa University-Gaza, University of Palestine, Al-Quds University, Bethlehem University, Birzeit University, Palestine Polytechnic University, Arab American University, Ibrahimieh College and Al-Azhar University-Gaza.

The difficult situation of the Gaza population, as a result of the Israeli war actions, has made contact with these universities difficult. Nevertheless, the Universitat de València continues to work on creating collaboration agreements to help the Palestinian university community.

The framework of collaboration agreements will be approved by the GoverningCouncil, and they will have to be developed into specific agreements that establish the collaboration and cooperation programmes between the universities.
