The Governing Council of the Universitat de València approves unanimously the institutional declaration supporting the claims of the educational community and defending public education.
The Universitat de València states the need to reinforce public education and makes a new call for negotiations to advance with the maximum celerity and with an effective willingness to reach agreements aligned with the conditions and resources required for the development of a quality teaching.
The extraordinary Governing Council has approved first –as written on the rules- the appropriateness of emergency. The Principal, Juan Luis Gandia, has explained all the actions carried out from the beginning to support the educational community and their claims, and in particular the two statements issued and published by the Universitat de València, which were further supported by the Universitat Jaume I.
The Universitat de València holds an institutional position responsible for an issue that still worry the university community a lot, since it affects the acknowledge of the labour conducted by teachers in all the educational stages. This function is essential for training new generations, for social cohesion, and for the equality of opportunities, and it constitutes a key element for the continuity and quality of the educational system overall, from the first educational stages to the university. The unanimity achieved in the voting for the institutional declaration by the Governing Council endorses the position held by our university from the first moment.
The statement makes a new call for negotiations to advance with the maximum celerity and with an effective willingness to reach agreements aligned with the need for the development of quality teaching that allows to overcome this situation. The extension of the conflict creates an emerging and shared concern in broad sectors of the educational community and the Valencian society, and requires to intensify the efforts to find an agreed, responsible and satisfying response.
The Universitat de València reaffirms its strong commitment to public education, to the acknowledge of teachers’ labour, to the defence of democratic rights, and to the search for agreed solutions that contribute to the welfare and progress of our society. This commitment also includes valorising Valencian as a part of our institutional identity and as a language of knowledge, coexistence, and public projection, as well as the need for the educational system to guarantee its effective learning within an inclusive and respectful frame towards the linguistic plurality of the Valencian society.
