The Museum of Fine Arts renews the commodate with the Universitat de València for Goya’s “Juego de Niños” paintings.

The Museum of Fine Arts of Valencia has renewed the commodate with the Universitat de València to keep Francisco de Goya’s paintings, which are part of the permanent collection since 1925. These two paintings are oil paintings of a series that Goya dedicated to children: “El paso o el marro/la Pídola” and “El balancín”.

These two paintings come from Ignacio Tarazona Blanch’s the collection. When he died in 1924, he commanded his wife María de la Encarnación Marqués y Martínez to deliver his two Goya paintings to the Board of Trustees of the University from Fundación Tarazona Blanch.

Once the Board of Trustees accepted the delivery, it proceeded to deposit the paintings in the Museum of Fine Arts of Valencia for their preservation and fulfil strictly the testamentary disposition of the legatee.

After 92 years, both sides consider convenient to renew the agreement by signing a new commodate. The representative of the Conselleria de Educación, Investigación, Cultura y Deporte, Albert Girona; and the Principal of the Universitat de València and President of Fundación Ignacio Tarazona Blanch, Esteban Morcillo; have agreed to renew the connate for 5 years. It will be possible to renew it annually and automatically if any side expresses the contrary.

“Although they are small-sized, they are a real pictorial treasure. Goya paints children playing in the outskirts of Madrid with an époque atmosphere. It is a pleasure to contribute to its dissemination, especially from a cultural institution such as the Museum of Fine Arts of Valencia” stated the Principal Esteban Morcillo after signing the document in the ceremony. Apart from the Principal of the museum, José Ignacio Casar; several members of the Board of Trustees and the manager of Fundació General de la Universitat de València, Cristóbal Suria; have attended the event.

In addition, the Universitat de València has expressed its gratitude to the patronage and the legacy of Professor Ignacio Tarazona. It also appreciated the work conducted by the Board of Trustees of Fundación Ignacio Tarazona, the recent directors and staff of the Astronomical Observatory of Valencia, and the personnel of Fundació General.

Both Goya’s paintings will continue in exhibition in the Goya Room on the first floor in the Museum of Fine Arts of Valencia. Temporal cessions to other museums and exhibitions will need the consent of the Foundation.
