Eugenio Coronado

Eugenio Coronado is a professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the Universitat de València and will be awarded tomorrow an honorary doctorate by the Université de Bretagne Occidental (UBO) in Brest (France). His appointment intends to recognise his notable scientific influence in one of the main areas of research of this academic French institution: molecular materials.

Eugenio Coronado is one of the most influential Spanish Chemist in the international scientific scene. He focused on designing and synthesising new molecular materials with magnetic, electrical and optical properties. His work counts with an excellent funding, such as one Advanced Grant and one Proof of Concept, both of them from the European Research Council (ERC).

In his long career as a researcher, two scientific achievements stand out in the nanoscience, nanotechnology and molecular magnetism areas. His team designed the first molecular materials where magnetism and electric conductivity coexist. Both are properties of technological interest.  Apart from this revelation published in Nature in 2000, he designs molecular Nano-magnets that act as magnetic memories and have quantum effects. Both lines of research open interesting possibilities applied to Molecular Spintronics and the new quantum technologies.

The appointment of Coronado as Doctor Honoris Causa by the UBO has been encouraged by the Laboratoire de Chimie, Electrochimie Moléculaires et Chimie Analytique (CEMCA-CNRS/UBO). Chemist Smail Triki, who is a researcher in this facility and Coronado’s collaborator in different projects, will pronounce the Laudation in the Inauguration Ceremony.

Eugenio Coronado started his research career in Strasbourg. He has collaborated with different French universities and research centres such as Université Paris-Sud, Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Université de Versailles-Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines or the CNRS/Thales. He took an international seat Blaise Pascal for two years, which is a scientific mention for drawing internationally prestigious foreign researchers to the centres of investigation in Île-de-France.

Coronado is the head of the Instituto de Ciencia Molecular of the Universitat de València, at the Parc Científic. He carries out most of his work at this institute. In addition, he has amassed awards such as Premio Rey Jaime I, Premio Nacional de Química, or Premio Nacional Rey Juan Carlos I, among others. His name also appears at prominent scientific organizations around the world, such as the European Institute of Molecular materials of which he is the director.
