The ex-president of the United Nations General Assembly will give a conference at La Nau of the Universitat de València.

María Fernanda Espinosa, president of the United Nations General Assembly from September 2018 to 2019, will give a conference on Thursday, in Centre Cultural La Nau of the Universitat de València. The act is situated in the activities of Escola Europea of Pensament Lluís Vives and it is organised together with CEMAS-Centro Mundial de Valencia para la Alimentación Urbana Sostenible (World Sustainable Urban Food Centre of València).

The conference, entitled: Paseo por lo sublime y lo macabro. Un año como Presidenta de la Asamblea General de Naciones Unidas (A walk through the sublime and the macabre. One year as United Nations General Assembly), will take place in Paraninfo, at 7:00 p.m. It will be hosted by Antonio Ariño, Vice-Principal for Culture and Sport of the Universitat de València and Vicente Domingo, CEMAS director.  

María Fernanda Espinosa has been president for the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly from 2018 to 2019. She is an Ecuadorian politician, diplomat, rights defender and poet that has more than twenty years of experience in international level, in multilateral themes and international negotiations in peace, security, defense, human rights, bio-diversity, climate change, indigenous communities, gender equality, young people rights, among others themes.

She holds Environmental Geography studies at the Rutgers University, Master’s degree in Social Science and Amazonic Studies and postgraduate degree in Anthropology and Political Science from the FLACSO (Latinamerican Social Science Faculty). She was Minister of National Defense, of Foreign Affairs and Inegration, of Heritage and UN Ambassador in New York and Geneva. Espinosa has published more than 30 academic articles, several poetry books and poems in more than 20 anthologies.

The Escola Europea de Pensament Lluís Vives is a cultural project, launched by the Office of the Vice-Principal for Culture and Sport and with the General Foundation of the Universitat de València that is created as a space for reflection and open, participatory, and critical debate about the current issues. The Escuela has the participation of other individuals of the Public administration and civil society: the President of the Valencian government, the City Hall of Valencia, the Valencian Department of Transparency and Education, Research, Culture and Sports, Acadèmia Valenciana de la Llengua, the Alfons el Magnànim Institute, the Escola Europea d’Humanitats and Caixa Popular.
