The Faculty of Chemistry held on 21st and 22nd of November the workshop ‘Drogues en la Societat 4.0’ (Drugs in our Society 4.0.). In addition to the problem of drugs, some of the social aspects of the issue of these substances in the context of today's society have been analysed. The participation of researchers from different fields also gave an insight into the research being carried out in this field.

The session was inaugurated by José Roberto González, sub-Delegate of the Government in Valencia, and was also attended by Alicia Guillén, General Secretary of the Government of the Valencia Region; and Miguel Ángel Aragón, Director of Foreign Health and Social Policy area of the Delegation of the Valencia Government; and Adela Mauri, Dean of the Faculty.

During the session, various contributions made by research groups working on drug analysis in the Valencian Community were presented. Félix Hernández, researcher at the Universitat Jaume I de Castelló, spoke of the contributions that the analysis of wastewater involves around the drug consumption by the population, and Maria Ibáñez, researcher at the same university, dealt with research into the new psychoactive substances consumption through the use of chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. On behalf of the Universitat de València, Daniel Gallart presented some examples of the work that SolinDrugs (Analytical Chemistry Department) has carried out in the development of methodologies for drug analysis, while Aitor Sorribes, also from SolinDrugs, spoke of the applications of ionic mobility spectrometry in the analysis of drugs in biological fluids. Finally, Ana Costero, also from the Universitat de València, presented her group's research into the development of chemical sensors based on colour as a protection system against chemical submission.

The workshop was also attended by non-profit organisations such as Energy Control - ABD (Barcelona), which presented substance analysis as a tool to monitor the recreational drug market; Ai Laket! (Vitoria), as an example of risk reduction programmes; and Conscientious Consumption (Zaragoza), which spoke of risk reduction as more than a strategy for tackling drug use. This session was completed with the participation of the Laboratori de Control de Drogues of Valencia (Drug Control Laboratory), which presented the current challenges of these types of laboratories, and the Law enforcement in Spain (Guardia Civil), with a presentation on the drug precursors control.

The workshop was attended by Degree and Master’s Degree students, researchers from different departments, as well as professionals and the general public with an interest in the problem of drugs in today's society.

The conference, organised by SolinDrugs in the Analytical Chemistry Department of the Universitat de València, was held within the actions of the Project AICO/2019/099 Control de sustancias psicoactivas emergentes (Emerging psychoactive substances control), funded with grants from the Generalitat Valenciana (Valencia Government) for Grups d’Investigació Consolidables.
