The Faculty of Physics has programmed several activities on the occasion of the International Day of Light which is celebrated today, Thursday 16 May. In the central act the prizes of the Photographic Contest dedicated to this day have been delivered. In addition, several videos related to light and light technologies have been projected.

The Faculty of Physics, together with the Local Section of València of the Royal Spanish Society of Physics (RSEF), celebrated this week the International Day of Light, an international event administered by the International Basic Science Programme of UNESCO.  The day chosen to celebrate it is May 16 of each year to commemorate the first emission of laser light on May 16, 1960, obtained by Theodore Maiman with a ruby laser. Just the laser is a paradigmatic example of how a scientific discovery provides revolutionary tools for the global benefit of society, in communications, in health technologies and many other applications in multiple fields.

The Photography Contest has involved both students, faculty and staff administration and services.  The jury was formed by the dean of the centre, Jordi Vidal; by the member of the Local Section of València of the RSEF, Chantal Ferrer; and by the professor of the Department of Optics and Optometry and Vision Sciences, Javier García Monreal. The first prize went to the student José Lozano with a photograph 'CD com a xarxa de difracció'. The second prize for the student Jorge Zanón with the photograph 'Esferas de jabón' and the third for Laura Cuèllar, PAS of the faculty, with the photograph 'Fràgil i vital'.  The prizes have been financed by the Educational Innovation Project UV-SFPIE_GER18-846540.
