The Faculty of Physics of the University of Valencia has convened the XVII edition of the Experimenta Fair-Contest of Experiments and Demonstrations of Physics and Technology on April 10 at the Museum of Sciences of Valencia, aimed at students of ESO, Baccalaureate and intermediate level training cycles. Registration, with the description of the project, is open until February 4.

The Experimenta 2022 Fair aims to turn students into active and creative protagonists of science and technology. The objective is for each participating group (of 4 people maximum) to work on an experimental project in the STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) with the help of their teacher, show it and explain it. The activity also proposes to encourage and increase the participation of women.

Proposals can belong to any field or topic, although they must show some physical principle or their practical application, and especially their interrelation and multidisciplinary nature. Two modes of participation and competition are established: physics demonstrations and experiments, and technological applications projects. The work associated with the supervision of the projects presented will also be certified.

“Innovation and technological development depend, to a large extent, on curiosity and enthusiasm to know and understand everything that surrounds us, even the most everyday things. It is very important that students can get involved in the first person and enjoy science”, highlights the organisation of Experimenta. This call aims to encourage work associated with experimental projects, so that familiarity with reality is acquired and the ability to discuss and relate what is observed with the principles of science and technological applications is put into play.

Among the projects presented at the fair, five prizes will be awarded. Four of them valued at € 300 and the most voted by the visiting public, at € 200. Different honourable mentions will also be awarded, in addition to prizes for the faculty departments that tutor winning projects, consisting of materials for assembling experiences in physics or technology.

The proper functioning of the experiments or prototypes, the correct understanding by the contestant groups of their own work and the clarity of the explanations are the aspects most valued by the jury. At the end of the fair, the awards ceremony will be held and an exhibition of the awarded projects will be organised at a later date.

This initiative has a competitive project of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology of the Ministry of Science and Innovation (FECYT-MICINN), in addition to the collaboration of other entities, such as the Prince Felipe Museum of Sciences of Valencia, the City Council of Valencia or the Royal Spanish Physical Society. On the part of the University, it is supported by the Corpuscular Physics Institute (IFIC), the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit (UCC + i), the Delegation for Incorporation to the UV, the Sanchis Guarner Training and Quality Centre, the Equality Unit, the Archimedes Physics Working Group, the ScienceFlows Group, as well as various external entities.

The Experimenta Fair-Contest was born in 2005 with the aim of involving students in the World Year of Physics in an active and creative way. The enthusiasm of the contestants and visitors was extraordinary and helped transform the event into an annual event.
