The Faculty of Teacher Training of the Universitat de València opens on Wednesday 3 May an exhibition about the cooperative project ‘Maqueta del barrio’, which is created by the students of the five year of state school in the neighbourhood La Coma. The opening will be tomorrow at 13:00h and could be visited until 15 May. The coordinator of the exhibition is Pablo Alcón, teacher of CEIP La Coma.

According to the prime movers, the neighbourhood La Coma has suffered a double stigma for many years. On the one hand, this neighbourhood has a bad image for those who do not live there; and on the other hand, the residents do not take care of their area. The cooperative project ‘Maqueta del barrio’ (‘Mockup of the neighbourhood’) is based on this reality. The students have thought about their closer environment, their neighbourhood, during five months. They have worked with curricular contents (calculation, stairs, proportions, maps, drawings, sketches, line drawing, composition, colours, materials, problem resolution, team work, and so on).

Apart from this, they have learnt other important things since the beginning such as: ‘How is our neighbourhood?’, ‘What things do we like about it?’, ‘And what things do we hate about it?’, ‘What can we do to change the things we don’t like?’, ‘And what can we do to highlight the good things?’ In conclusion, this project makes possible for the students to learn about “life” and especially, about “life in society”. This can be done by two means: on the one hand, by working together, accepting the virtues and limitations of each one and make our own contribution to the community. And, on the other hand, by working about what joins us, the neighbourhood.

“To transform the reality, first we have to learn to look at it. Then, to judge it. And, finally to participate in this transformation. It is certain that there are lot of people in the neighbourhood who have worked daily for many years in this labour. The future generations should follow this model of hard effort and try to end up with this labour in order to live in harmony and fraternity”, claim the promoters.
