“With the first conference Women and Sport we want to highlight and promote women participation in sports, not only from an academic point of view, but also the most immediate reality, from the daily practice”, claims the director of the conference, José Campos. He is also president of the organizing committee composed by members of the Universitat de València, the City Hall of Valencia, the Valencian Provincial Council, the Association of sport professional managers of the Valencian Community and other experts.

The conference is an initiative and also reaffirms equality policy of opportunities at the University as well as in the sport services. For the first time, the Institution holds an specific conference about women and sport with participation of sponsoring companies, elite athletes, media and academic experts. The prize Delikia to the best project developing in the practice of female sport is also for the first time convened. “It is an award that wants to recognise the innovation in this area, on the part of public, associations, organisations working daily in the field of Sport and women to give it greater visibility and promotion”, exposes Campos.

Furthermore, the first conference of Women and Sport is based on a political and academic tradition of the Universitat de València. That guarantee years of continued commitment from the Physical Education and Sports Service, and also from institutional units, such as the Equality Unit. For instance, the High Council for Sports ('Consejo Superior de Deportes’) recognised in 2011 this labour with the prize to the best Spanish university in promoting female sport. The attention to the effective equality is translated to the design of sport and recreational activity programmes destined to the female participation in a 80% of the offer. The same occurs with competitions, because all teams have these two categories. In addition, the University recognises during its annual gala of sport the female sport promotion. Levante Unión Deportiva presented the award in the last edition.
