The full university professor, Josep Lluís Barona elected as a full member of the Institute of Catalan Studies

The Institute of Catalan Studies, an institution that is part of the International Union of Academies, has incorporated to the Biologic Sciences Section professor of the Universitat de València, Josep Lluís Barona, as a full member. The agreement has been made in the session held on 9 March and it has been valued the scientific and human career of the full university professor of History of Science and Documentation of the Universitat de València.

Main researcher of around ten research projects, he supervises the researcher group Sanhisoc/Health in Society (www.sanhisoc.es) above three lines of research: the circulation of the scientific knowledge about health and medicine in the contemporary Europe, the history of public health in the 20th century and the genesis of the international health service, as well as the history of nutrition.  The health in the rural world and the exile of republican scientifics have been cross curricular arguments of his research.

Institute of Catalan Studies (IEC) was founded in 1907, in the image and likeness of the Institute de France, and its aim is to study at the highest level every discipline of knowledge, throughout the Catalan-speaking countries. Since 1922 it is part of the International Union of Academies.

The IEC encourages more than a hundred research programmes by its five sections: Historic Archaeology, Biological Sciences, Sciences and Technology, Language Studies and Philosophy and Social Sciences.  Each section is formed by a maximum of 28 full members, emeritus members and presidents of the subsidiary companies assigned to the sections. Furthermore, it works as a consultant of public administrations and research institutions; and pronounces itself about strategic questions or in relation with legislatives measures. It is possible to make relevant contributions about them.

IEC members are full, emeritus, supernumerary or corresponding. The IEC plenary is formed by full and emeritus members, and also by presidents of the subsidiary companies. 

The IEC acts like an academic centre of research and it hosts initiatives of other institutions related to research and culture, and it also edits more than a hundred publications every year, such as books and specialized magazines.
