Government appoints Professor Ángeles Solanes president of Council for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

Vice-president and minister of Relations with the Parliament and Equality Carmen Calvo has appointed University of Valencia Professor Ángeles Solanes Corella president of the Council for the Elimination of Racial or Ethnic Discrimination. Ángeles Solanes is full professor of Philosophy of Law and a research in the Human Rights Institute (IDH-UV).

Created in 2007, this Council aims to boost the equal treatment principle and end discrimination against people for their racial or ethnic origin in areas such as education, health, access to benefits, social services, housing, employment or training. Its main function is giving independent legal advice to victims of discrimination, publishing independent research and reports and promoting measures that contribute to equal treatment and elimination of discrimination through recommendations and proposals.

Ángeles Solanes is full professor at the Faculty of Philosophy of Law and she is a founding member of the Human Rights Institute at the University of València. Her research deals with topics such as human rights with a Spanish law and comparative perspective, issues in regards of multicultural societies, immigration policies, equality, social integration, voluntary work and third sector, as well as the promotional function of law and fundamental juridical concepts. She is author of several books and multiple articles in specialised scientific magazines, and she has done research stays in internationally acclaimed centres such as Paris, Milan, Brussels, Ginevra, London, San Diego, Moscow and Montreal.

In 2018, The Human Rights Institute of the University of Valencia (IDH-UV) has initiated a wide activity programme, marking the seventieth anniversary of the celebration of the Universal Human Rights Declaration. IDH-UV was created in 2005 and it is coordinated by the “Bartolomé de las Casas” Human Rights Institute (IDHBC) of the Universidad Carlos III. It is part of the project Consolider, in which 12 research groups of different Spanish universities take part in.
