Gustau Camps-Valls, physicist and professor of Electronic Engineering at the University of Valencia, has been named a fellow of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), the largest international organisation dedicated to Earth and space sciences. With this recognition, the AGU highlights Camps-Valls’ scientific excellence. He will receive the distinction at the official ceremony to be held this December in New Orleans, USA.
By receiving this honour, Camps-Valls joins the select group of 52 individuals recognised this year by the American Geophysical Union (AGU), one of the most influential scientific organisations in the field of Earth and space sciences. Founded in 1919 within the US National Research Council, the AGU became an independent body in 1972 and has since played a central role in promoting research worldwide. In addition to publishing some of the most prestigious journals in the field, such as Geophysical Research Letters and the Journal of Geophysical Research, it also organises the annual AGU Fall Meeting, one of the world’s most important conferences in its discipline.
On this occasion, Camps-Valls has been recognised for his research and innovation in the use of machine learning applied to remote sensing. His pioneering methodologies have significantly advanced the field and have also contributed to training new generations of researchers.
Camps-Valls, who holds a PhD in Physics and is professor of Electronic Engineering, leads the Image and Signal Processing (ISP) Group at the Image Processing Laboratory (IPL) of the University of Valencia. He works on artificial intelligence for Earth and climate sciences. Since 2020, he has been listed as a Highly Cited Researcher – one of the world’s most influential specialists measured by his high citation index – and has received numerous awards and honours for his contributions, including IEEE Fellow (2018), ELLIS Fellow (2019), Fellow of the European Academy of Sciences (EurASc) and Fellow of Academia Europaea (AE). In recent years, he has been awarded two research grants from the European Research Council: an ERC Consolidator Grant (2015) and an ERC Synergy Grant (2019). He currently coordinates the ELLIS programme Machine Learning for Earth and Climate Sciences.
As an AGU fellow, Camps-Valls will serve as an international expert, advising both governmental bodies and organisations beyond the strictly scientific sphere.
The 2025 awards will be presented at the official AGU25 ceremony, to be held in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, in December.
