According to the jury’s decision, Gustau Camps-Valls “has revolutionised the way of modelling and comprehending the terrestrial system through hybrid focuses of Artificial Intelligence and causal inference. He was one of the firsts to integrate advanced automatic-learning methods with physical models of the climate and the environment, and he introduced modern techniques of AI in the remote-sensing and observation of the Earth”. His work has deeply transformed the way of modelling and interpreting environmental data, opening a new paradigm in geo-scientific comprehension.
Gustau Camps-Valls is a full professor in Electrical Engineering and responsible of the research group Image and Signal Processing (ISP) in the Image Processing Laboratory (IPL) of the Universitat de València.
His research is mainly focused on the development of algorithms of machine learning for the analysis of Earth observation data and the geosciences. He is a prolific author and highly cited researcher since 2019. He has coordinated twelve research projects, as well as different financed contracts by the European Commission, the European Space Agency and EUMETSAT. He was awarded with a Consolidator Grant and a Synergy Grant both from the European Research Council (ERC) to advance AI for modeling and understanding the Earth system.
The Blaise Pascal Medal is a recognition for people for their prominent contribution to science, technology and research teaching. The selection process implies a meticulous evaluation by the Division committee, with the final approbation of the EurASc General Council. This distinguished recognition highlights Professor Camps-Valls’ pioneering work at the intersection of artificial intelligence and Earth system sciences. His contributions have revolutionized how climate and environmental data are analyzed and understood, creating a new paradigm in geoscientific research. His development of hybrid AI models and causality for Earth observation is internationally acclaimed.
The delivery ceremony will take place during the Symposium and Ceremony of the EurASc 2025, that will be celebrated in the CERN (Geneva, Switzerland) on 17 and 18 December 2025, where Gustau Camps-Valls will give the conference.
