The Spanish Network of Healthy Universities –in Spanish Red Española de Universidades Saludables (REUS)– will celebrate the ‘Healthy Universities Day’ for the fourth consecutive year. Among the scheduled activities, fresh fruit will be shared today at the Faculty of Medicine and a contest will run in Twitter.

The campaign aims to highlight the REUS members’ work. The Network –set up in 2008 and now coordinated at the University of the Balearic Islands– includes 54 universities, two Spanish Ministries (Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality; and Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport), the CRUE (Spanish University Rectors' Conference), and 9 health facilities of the autonomous regions.

Seasonal fruit will be shared today at the Faculty of Medicine between 10 AM and 1 PM.

The 'Reto de la Fruta' contest will take place for the second time with the hashtag #IIRetoFrutaREUS. After the successful last edition, the REUS wants to keep encouraging students to eat fruit. The contest in Twitter consists of posting pictures eating a piece of fruit, this has become very popular among the universities in the Network. It must be highlighted that REUS is working so that its policies are sustainable, according to 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

REUS work consists of constantly create links with other networks: for instance, the relationship with the Ibero-American Universities Promoters of Health Network (in Spanish RIUPS) and the European Network, with which it shares models for proceeding and policy interventions.

These healthy universities aim to incorporate and integrate health into education, creating contexts that serve as examples for universities and so society itself.

The ‘Healthy Universities Day’ was created so that the Declaración de Pamplona (October 7th 2009) was commemorated. REUS attempts to perpetuate this date by making visible each year those works on health carried out by universities. This year’s edition in particular is significant since it coincides with the REUS’ 10th anniversary and the 1st Congress of Universities Promoters of Health, which will be held on November 7th – 9th at the University of the Balearic Islands campus.

In Spain, healthy universities are an example of commitment with the human development of those universities’ members and the enhancement of their lives. There is no doubt that active participants, that serve as sustainable models for their peers and families, are trained at university, and thus they act in their workspace and other social contexts. A person then becomes not only responsible for their health but also for the health of those with whom they interact.

In this sense, REUS makes easier for its members to have every knowledge on healthy universities with resources on its website. This networking guarantees a sustainability of its actions, a constant bond among its members and a better quality in health interventions.
