Hundreds of people gather in a demonstration at the gates of the Office of the Principal because of the International Women's Day

Hundreds of people gathered on Thursday at mid-day at the gates of the Office of the Principal because of the International Women's Day. The Universitat de València celebrates, as every year, the International Women's Day with a large programme of cultural and educational activities that will take place around the 8th of March. They will last for several days.

The Equality Unit, University Institute of Women's Studies and the Chair in Feminist Economics of the Universitat de València have written a manifest to invite all women within the university community to join the call for a feminist strike on March 8. They also have invited them to join the protest meeting at 12 a.m. in the gates of the Office of the Principal.

The new Principal Mavi Mestre stood behind the banner in the demonstration alongside with the acting Principal and members of the former and new teams.  

The institutional act will take place on Wednesday 7th of March at 6:30 p.m. in the Assembly Hall at the Cultural Centre La Nau.  After reading a manifest, psychologist and Professor Anna Freixas at the University of Cordoba will give the conference Sin reglas. Erótica y libertad femenina en la madurez. Then, the exhibition Cerámica en manos de mujer.  Miradas diversas will be inaugurated in the General Study Lounge.

Programme of activities
The March for Equality programme started on Wednesday 28 of February in the Sala Matilde Salvador of La Nau with the performance Martingala by La SubTerránea. It continued on Thursday 1 of March at the Faculty of Psychology with the Programa Contexto sessions.

On Friday 2nd of March, the exhibition La Economía no es solo cosa de hombres will be inaugurated at the Faculty of Economics.  

On Monday 5 of March, the 2nd Female Researcher Sessions will be held in the Assembly Hall of the Scientific Park. It will count with several interventions. Mariam Tórtola Baixauli, Researching Award OréalUnesco For Women in Science (IFIC-UVEG/CSIC) will speak about women in the Physics field. Capitolina Díaz, professor in Sociology at the Universitat de València will present Agnotología, gineagnosia e histéresis social de género. Adela Muñoz, professor at the University of Seville will address female researchers within the convents and the palaces. Ángela Sastre Santos, professor at Miguel Hernández University of Elche, will address women and science, particularly in the Chemistry area. To conclude, Marta Macho Stadler, professor at the Universidad del País Vasco, will explain how education works in the female scientific field.   Following these interventions, a panel of discussion will be held. On the same day, the exhibition Tres veces rebelde will be inaugurated at the Faculty of Economics. There will be an introductory speech by Amelia Soler.

On March 6, a session entitled Un paso más hacia la igualdad de género will be held at the Faculty of Physiotherapy. It consists in several conferences and the inauguration of Francisca Lita Sáez’s exhibition.  The programme can be consulted here.

The Performing Arts in La Nau has a special programme this month. On March 6 and 7, it exhibits the work Las Sinsombrero.

On 12 March at 1:00 a.m. Londa Shienbinger will be invested Honorary Doctor by the Universitat de València. She is a professor in History of Science at Stanford University and director of Gendered Innovations.  More information https://genderedinnovations.stanford.edu/

She is one of the main promoters of the analysis of sex/gender within research activities.  Particularly she promotes it in health, Engineering and environment areas.  She is the author, among many other works, of the popular book ¿Tiene sexo la mente?, in which she explains the exclusion of women and non-European people during the birth of modern science (17th and 18th centuries).    

As every year, the Cinema Club, the Music Club and the Performing Arts Club have prepared a special programme for the Women’s day.

On March 14, the conference Una ventana al universo infinito of the International Women's Day IFIC/IATA will be held at 12 a.m. Pilar Hernández, Professor of the Universitat de València-IFIC, will be in charge. . The conference will take place at the Assembly Hall of the Main Building at the Scientific Park.

Activities will go on in March and April in several campuses.
