Inés Jiamin and Desirée Cuenca win the 2022 Chinese Bridge Competition organized by the Confucius Institute of the Universitat de València

Inés Jiamin, in the secondary education category and Desirée Cuenca in the university category, were the winners of the Chinese Bridge Competition organized by the Confucius Institute of the Universitat de València (ICUV). The event was held in face-to-face format after two editions in online format.

The Assembly hall of the Faculty of Philology, Translation and Communication hosted the traditional competition on Saturday. The ICUV has organized this competition in València for 13 years without interruption, with the participation of sondary school and university students that are studying Chinese. In fact, in this edition, there have been a significant number of amateur participants.

This competition is open to all Chinese students of the Valencian Community and values the knowledge about language and culture of China, and has three phases. In first one they have to give a two-minute speech in Chinese about the competition’s slogan, that this year 2022 was “Fly high with Chinese” and “One world, one family”. In the second phase they answer a questionnaire about Chinese language and culture. And in the third one an artistic exhibition is assessed.

The price for each of the winners is a free four-month course in the ICUV and their participation in the Chinese Bridge Competition of Sapin that will be held on 18 June in an on-line format, which is organized by the Confucius Institute of the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria University.

The other participants receive a gift. In the amateur category, a group of students of the Laude British School of Vila-real presented various artistic exhibitions outside the competition.

During the competition, which took place in a festive atmosphere, the director of the ICUV, professor Vicente Andreu, expressed his satisfaction “at having being able to recover the face-to-face modality this year. It has been a personal reunion with our students and their families. They are the true essence of our Institute and the activities we carry out”.

The Tai Chi School Tantien, directed by master Félix Castellanos, also made a group presentation with the participation of the public. The Tai Chi is a millennial Chinese martial art with a strong presence in the West which is Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, by Unesco, since the end of 2020.

The Chinese Bridge Competition is orgainized all over the world by the Confucius Institutes. This year it celebrates its 21 edition in the university category and the 15 in seconday. The winners from each country have the opportunity to participate in the world competition which is organised every year in a different Chinese city.
