‘Gaza – Is this the end of all hope?’ is the title of the lecture that Jesús Núñez Villaverde will give at the closing ceremony of the master’s course promoted by the Institute of Human Rights (IDH) of the Universitat de València. It will take place next Thursday, 6 June. Another event will take place on 27 June, in which Marc Ferrando will present a report on the Palestine-Israel conflict from an International Human Rights perspective.

The conference with Jesús Núñez will begin at 4:30pm in the Graduate Hall (Ascensión Chirivella classroom) of the Faculty of Law. Joan Marc Ferrando will speak at 12 noon at the IDH seminar (Institutions Building at Calle Serpis, 29).

The organisers of these events maintain that the civilian population of Palestine is displaced and helpless, and that their basic human rights are being systematically violated as a result of Israel’s military actions in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. “Therefore, the students of the Legal Clinic for Social Justice of the Universitat de València, together with the universities of Salamanca, the Balearic Islands, La Rioja, Elche, Rey Juan Carlos and Deusto, have participated in drawing up a report that will serve as a tool to support claims for international protection that may be made by refugees from the war in Palestine who arrive in Spain,” the organisers state.

Joan-Marc Ferrando Hernández is a researcher at the Institute of Human Rights of the Universitat de València. He is currently an Adjunct Professor of International Public Law and a consultant on issues of human rights and international law. He works closely with the Legal Clinic for Social Justice.

Ferrando received his doctorate in International Human Rights, Democracy and Justice from the Universitat de València with a doctoral theses titled ‘La destrucción de bienes culturales en conflicto armado: el caso del Dáesh en Siria’ (The destruction of cultural goods in armed conflict: the case of Daesh in Syria), which was supervised by José Elías Esteve.

Jesús A. Núñez Villaverde is an economist and retired military soldier. He is Co-Director of the Institute for Conflict Studies and Humanitarian Action (IECAH). He is an expert in the areas of safety, peace-building and conflict prevention, with a particular interest in the Arab and Muslim spheres. He has lectured in International Relations at the University Pontificia Comillas, has served as a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) and has been a consultant for the United Nations Development Programme (PNUD) in peace-building and violent conflict prevention. Jesús A. Núñez works closely with print, radio and television media.
