The auditorium of the Universitat de València will host the investiture of professor Barry Clark Barish as Honorary Doctorate of the Universitat de València on Tuesday May 31.

The act can be followed from 12 hours via streaming in a broadcast produced by the audio-visual workshop.

He was born in Omaha (USA) in 1936. Graduated and doctor in physics for the University of California, Berkeley, Dr. Barish was the principal researcher at the Laser Interferometer Gravitational – Wave Observatory between 1994 and 2005, and director of the LIGO Laboratory in Caltech between 1997 and 2006.

Dr. Barish's scientific career has spanned several areas of fundamental physics, creating the first intense anti-proton beam at Boorkhaven in the 1960s. With the Nobel laureates in Physics Friedman, Kendall and Taylor he built the firs spectrometer at Stanford for the study of high-energy electron collisions, and in the 1970s he developed an accelerator capable of producing a narrow-band neutrino beam. His research was instrumental in establishing the unification of the electromagnetic interaction and the weak nuclear interaction in the theory of Glasho, Weinber and Salam, Nobel laureates in physics, which forms the basis of today's Standard Model of Particle Physics.

By presidential appointment, he was a member of the National Science Board of the United States of America from 2003 to 2009, and has served on numerous commissions and committees.

Barry C. Barish is member of the National Academy of Sciences, of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and of the American Physical Society, of which he was president in 2011.

In addition to the Nobel Prize and the Prince of Asturias, Dr. Barish has received numerous awards and distinctions, including the Henry Draper Medal of the US Academy of Sciences, the designation as “Physics Titan”, the American Ingenuity Award of the Smithsonian Magazine, the Enrico Fermiel Award, the Giuseppe y Vanna Cocconi Prize of the European Physical Society and the Fundan-Zhongzhi Science Prize. He has also received the Honoris Causa from the Bologna University, the University of Florida, the University of Glasgow, the Southern Methodist University, and the Sofia University.
