José Luis Canet

On Wednesday 6th of February, Professor of Spanish Literature at the University of Valencia José Luís Canet gave a conference on one of the classics of the Spanish Golden Age of literature, La Celestina. The conference was called 'Va existir realment Fernando de Rojas, l’autor de La Celestina?’.

In this lecture, Canet has broached the subject of whether there was only one (Fernando de Rojas) or more authors of the Celestina, a matter that has stimulated many debates among the literary critics. After many years of studying the Comedia de Calisto y Melibea, later modified as a Tragicomedia and widely known as Celestina, José Luis Canet doubts Fernando de Rojas, born in La Puebla de Montalbán in a converted family and who finally got to be the mayor of Talavera, was the actual author.

In order to arrive at this conclusion, he reviews all of the opinions on the authorship from the beginning of the 16th century until today, when there are more doubts than certainties. After his research, he denies there was only one author and he questions it was the work of a graduate.

José Luis Canet is a professor of Spanish Literature in the University of Valencia. He runs the magazine Celestinesca i Lemir ( Spanish Medieval Literature and Renaissance). He is also the producer of several data bases like Tipografía Valenciana de los siglos XV y XVI o Carteles teatrales valencianos del siglo XIX. He has conducted several research projects conceded by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities and other public and private institutions.
