The journalist Manuel Jabois will impart a conference on Tuesday 18th December entitled “Mentiras en la era de la posverdad” in the Assembly Room of the Cultural Centre La Nau at 7 p.m.

The journalist will address the role of journalists, which has become very risky. In recent days, the dissemination of lies via social media, particularly in social networks, affects electoral processes by creating false realities.

According to the RAE, post-truth is “the deliberate distortion of reality, manipulating beliefs and emotions aiming to influence public opinion and social behaviour”. Manuel Jabois considers that post-truth is a tool used to promote a particular movement and stir the public opinion. This happened in the Brexit, the Colombian peace process, Trump’s electoral victory and within the Catalan independence movement.

Manuel Jabois started his professional career in local journalism, specifically in the Journal of Pontevedra. Later, he wrote in El Mundo and in the cultural magazine Jot Down. Currently, he writes in El País and collaborates in the programme Hoy por Hoy of the Cadena Ser.  Jabois was given the 24th National Award of Journalism Julio Camba in 2003.  As a writer, Jabois published four non-fictional books: “Irse a Madrid” (2011), “Grupo Salvaje” (2012), “Manu” (2013) and “Nos vemos en esta vida o en la otra” (2016).

Entrance to the conference is free until the capacity of the room is reached.

The conference is encompassed within the series “Derechos en movimiento” of the European School of Thought Lluís Vives on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The event is also organised by the Office of the Vice-principal for Culture, Amnesty International, the History and Democratic Memmory Society and the Chair for Science Dissemination.

The European School of Thought Lluís Vives is a cultural project promoted by the Office of the Vice-principal for Culture and Sports. It is a space for reflection and critical debate on current issues. The School is manged by the General Foundation of the Universitat de València. Additionally, the School counts on the participation of other actors of the public administration and the civil society: The Presidency of the Valencian Government, the City Council of Valencia, the Valencian Department of Education, Research, Culture and Sport; the Academy of the Valencian Language; Alfonso the Magnanimous Institute; the European School of Humanities and Caixa Popular.
