Young female graduates in Journalism at the Universitat de València analyse the work context

The area of Journalism of the Universitat de València has organised the event “Communicating the difference”, which takes places on 17 April, in the Assembly Hall of the Faculty of Language Studies, Translation and Communication. The initiative pretends to be focus on the experiences and difficulties that have been lived by the young women graduates in the Universitat de València in the current work context.

Since its establishment during the course 2000-2001, the female students of Journalism of the Universitat de València (one of the degrees with the highest marks of Social Sciences) have exceeded in a significant way the number of male students. This observation is repeated in other universities, alongside the growing presence of essays in the media. But still, this trend has not resulted in incorporating female journalist in the labour market on an equal footing.

Joana Gallego, professor at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and expert on gender and communication, will be in charge of opening the event with the conference The media: ¿An engine or an obstacle for the equality? The conference will be completed by four round tables. This will be analyse, from different perspectives, experiences and difficulties in the incorporation and work development of the female journalist.

The first round table, moderated by the professor Patricia Cabezuelo, is entitled Equality and training in journalism and communication. It will have the participation of the journalists Maria Iranzo (Parc Científic UV), Carla Garrido (Compañía del Trópico), Miriam Bouiali (Levante-EMV) and Kristin Suleng (Ukemotion).

In the second round table of the morning, ¿A glass ceiling in the communication?, moderated by the professor María José Coperías, with the participation of Nadia Tronchoni (El País), Laura López (Grup Parlamentari Compromís), Carolina Salvador (Congreso de los Diputados) and Isabel Villar (Cadena Ser).

In the evening, the round table Civic complicities for other communication, moderated by the professor of Journalism Carolina Moreno, will have as speaker Pilar Devesa (Comité Antisida), Ana María Iborra (free-lance), Anna Ortiz (journalist and community manager) and Tereza Ciges (journal Saó).

In the last round table, Communicating in the key of women, will take part Paula Navarro (99.9 Valencia Radio), Blanca Aparisi (Grupo R Comunicación), Esma Kucukalic (Citizen Assambly of Mediterranean) and Beatriz de Zúñiga  (Las Provincias), with the moderation of the professor Lola Bañón.

The event is supported by the Equality Unit and the Department of Language Theory and Communications Sciences.
