Therefore, Gandía succeeds Mavi Mestre, who has held the position of the Principal for the last eight years. The new Principal of the Universitat de València will have a single term of six years without any possibility of presenting for a new re-election, as the Organic Law of the University System (LOSU) states. Gandía has already experienced the university management, since he was vice rector for Economics, Infrastructure and Information Technologies during Esteban Morcillo’s rectorship (2014-2018), as well as vice rector of the two first areas with Mavi Mestre, position of which he resigned one year after the beginning of the term.
The university electoral system is a system of weighted vote. According to the article 101 of the Constitution of the Universitat de València, the election of the principal is made by direct election or universal, free, and private suffrage. The weighted vote by sectors of the university community is distributed in different proportion according to the constitution. This way, the vote of the doctor teaching staff with permanent links counts a 51 % of the total votes for candidatures, validly issued by the university community. The no-doctor teaching staff without permanent links has the 12.67 % of the value. The student’s vote has a value of 25 %, while the administration and services staff has a 10 %, and the research staff in training a 1.33 %.
The act of proclamation of the provisional results of the Principal’s elections has been celebrated in the Aula Magna of the Principal's office building. The room was crowded by members of the university community, and by the teams of the different candidatures. Professor Carlos Padilla, one of the four candidates, attended too. The President of the Electoral Commission, María Elena Olmos, proclaimed the results and the victory of Juan Luis Gandía. The new Principal thanked during his intervention the participation and support that he received, and appealed to the “germanor” (fraternity) that needs to be preserved to work collectively. Gandía indicated that the results showed a request for change, but that change, following his campaign slogan, “will have to be with your help, everything that we want to do needs to be with you, with us”. Meanwhile, Ángeles Solanes congratulated the new Principal and wished him lots of wise choices, “because they will be good for everyone, and for our beloved university”. Solanes addressed the electoral process that has allowed the candidatures to contrast ideas, models, and to progress in the co-governance system. The Law’s Professor dedicated a few words to the Principal Mavi Mestre, and thanked her the possibility of having taken part of her governance team. Finally, the Principal Mavi Mestre, who ends her term after eight years, encouraged the new team and the whole university community to work on improving the academic institution.
