Juan Luís Gandía takes office as principal of the UV

Professor Juan Luís Gandía takes office as principal of the Univesitat de València. Gandía’s nomination was published in the DOCV on Monday, 13th April. This implies the cessation of the former principal Mavi Mestre. Thus, Gandía begins, on Tuesday, his term as principal.

The publication of the DOCV makes official the nomination of Juan Luís Gandía as principal, after winning the elections last 12th March. As the procedure states, the Consell de la Generalitat approved last 10th April, on a proposal from the Conselleria de Educació, Cultura i Universitats, the nomination of the professor of Financial Economics and Accounting as the new principal of the Universitat de València.

Officially, Juan Luís Gandía has taken office of the academic institution this Tuesday with the signature as the role of principal. The signature has taken place this Tuesday, at 10:00am at the Rector’s office building. The former principal, Mavi Mestre, was also present, who has made her cessation official.

From this Tuesday, Gandía already works as the principal and, during the following days, he will designate the vice-rectors.

The new principal will manage the Universitat de València for the next six years, with no possibility of re-election, according to the new universities law.

Nomination act of the Directors Board

The Board that will accompany Juan Luís Gandía in the management of the Universitat de València will be designated this Wednesday in an institutional act. The assembly hall of the Rector’s office will host the signature of the vice-rectors. It will take place at 12:30pm, and it will be opened to the public.

The new team will fully commit to their functions and the solemn and official act of Juan Luís Gandía taking office as president will be pending. It consists of an official act hosted in the Auditorium of the University, in La Nau historic centre, where the president of the Generalitat leads and where a representation of the university community, the political field, the judiciary and the civil society attends. The date will be known soon.

Juan Luís Gandía was born in Ontinyent. He is a professor of Financial Economics and Accounting form the Faculty of Economics, graduated and doctor of Economic and Business Studies in the Universitat de València, with an extraordinary prize. Throughout more than 34 years of commitment to the university, he has always been actively and simultaneously involved in fundamental activities that compose the career path of an academic. He has taken lead on accountability, both in teaching and research tasks and on knowledge transmission, as well as an implication in the university management. In all these fields, he has always maintained an innovative attitude, aimed to the academic excellence, something that has helped him gain a wide training baggage and a deep knowledge of the university management and in the different activities of it. In the teaching field, since his incorporation to the Department of Accountancy of the Universitat de València, he has taught lessons in several undergraduate and graduate degrees at the Faculty of Economics. He has also led several projects of educative innovation and he is the person in charge of a consolidated group of teaching innovation. 

His research aims mainly to the analysis of the new technologies’ impact in the transparency and reliability of corporate information, of the relation between auditing and financial quality information, and of the textual analysis of the non-financial information and its economic effects. He is the director of several lines of research included under the acronym META (Management Reporting, Transparency, Accounting Education and Reliability of Financial Information), registered in the Registro de Estructuras de Investigación (Research Structure Register). He has directed and participated in different competitive research projects, conducting transfer actions of knowledge with public and private entities. He is the author of several articles in indexed journals (WOS, SCOPUS), and several research monographies in institutions, such as the Instituto Valenciano de Investigaciones Económicas (IVIE), the Comisión Nacional del Mercado de Valores (CNMV), or the Asociación Española de Contabilidad y Administración de Empresas (AECA).

Commited to the transformation of the University, he was the president of the Department of Accountancy (2009-2012), a member of the Comisión de Estatutos (2009-2013), a member of the elaboration committee of the Studies Curriculum of the undergraduate degree in Business Management and Administration, and member of the elaboration committee of the studies curriculum of the master’s degree in Accounting, Auditing, and Management Control. He has also been the president’s delegate for the Management of the University Centre EDEM (2012-2014), vice-rector for Economics and Infrastructure and Information Technologies (2014-2018), and vice-rector of Economics and Infrastructure (2018-2019). Since 2022, he is coordinator of the Doctoral Programme in Accounting and Corporate Finances. He has also been elected to be a member of representation collective bodies of the university, being since 2009 a member of the staff, and being a member of the Centre Board of the Faculty of Economics.
