‘The women education in the 16th century Europe, between the reformation and the counter-reformation’ is the title of the conference given by the professor Julia Benavent. It is based on the works of Joan Lluis Vives as well as on the unprecedent testimony given by the tutor of the sons of Charles V and Philip II. The conference is part of the cycle ‘Women and Literature’ organised by the Academia Valenciana de la Llengua (Valencian Academy for Language) and the UV with the aim of highlighting the women’s contribution to literature, history, education and other disciplines.

The professor Benavent will analyse on this occasion the women’s precepts but she will also speak about the women who ignore them, the ones who write opposite novels to precepts. Julia Benavent is tenured university professor of Italian Language Studies in the Department of French and Italian Language Studies in the Faculty of Language Studies, Translation and Communication. She received the doctorate with a thesis about the ancient biographies of Savonarola.

Her researches dealt with the 15th and 16th centuries: Borja, the Valencian students in the Italian universities, the political correspondence of the Cardinal Granvelle, the encrypted language and lately she conducts a research project on ‘The women in the Habsburg Spain. Documentary Corpus 1526-1566.’

Her research is mainly focused on the philological edition of texts. In 2007, she published Biblioteca Dispersa, a compilation of 15the and 16th centuries books which are kept in several American and European libraries.

She edits the collection; ‘Documentos inéditos de Carlos V’ (Unprecedent documents of Charles V) and ‘Clásicos Aquae’ which deals with the disclosure of the classic works about the water. At the moment, the first book has been published: Dante: Quaestio de aqua te tierra; and now it is on the press Galileo Galilei, Del flujo y reflujo del agua del mar (Galileo Galilei, the rising tide and the ebb tide of the seawater).

She is a member of the editorial department of the Italian magazines: Memorie Domenicane y Archivum mentis.

The cycle Women and Literature takes place at Aula Magna of the Cultural Centre La Nau and consists of eleven conferences that are given from January 2017 to January 2018.  Admission is free and limited to the capacity of the hall.
