The Faculty of Physics has programmed different activities on the occasion of the International Day of Light that takes places on 16th May. This Thursday has been realised the principal act of prizes to the best photographs exhibited at the centre. Furthermore, some videos related to the light and its technologies have been projected.

The Faculty of Physics, together with the Local Valencian Section of Spanish Society for Physics (RSEF), has celebrated this week the International Day of Light, an international event managed by the International Programme of Basic Science of UNESCO. The day chosen to celebrate it has been on Wednesday 16th May of every year to commemorate the first emit laser light on 16th May 1960, obtained by Theodore Maiman with a ruby laser. Precisely, laser is a prime example of how a scientific discover provides revolutionary tools for global benefit of society, in communications, health technologies and many other applications in numerous fields.

The activities undertaken at the Universitat de València include a photo exhibition and a magic box that had a secret.

The photographs are from students of the subjects Optics I and Optics II. The activity was framed in a project of educative innovation in which participates professors of the faculty and university members of Alicante and Elche. The aim of this kind of educational activity was to develop an observation capacity of students and to connect the phenomena of nature-environment experimental with the concepts viewed on the subjects Optics I and Optics II of the third year of Physics Degree.

In addition, in the first floor on the D block, students could find a box with a side that disappears. The challenge was to find (with the acquired knowledge) the secret of this magic box.
