The Institutional Chair of Collaborative Economy and Digital Transformation of the Universitat de València, in collaboration with the Office of the Vice-Principal for Culture and Sport, Las Naves Foundation and the newspaper València Plaza, organises an electoral debate with the candidates for mayor of the political formations represented in the Plenary Session of the City Council of València on the proposals for the regulation of tourist apartments in the city of València.

In the debate, which took place on Wednesday 10 April at 19:00 hours in the Paranimf Hall of the Universitat de València (Cultural Centre La Nau), Joan Ribó (Compromís), María José Catalá (PPCV), Fernando Giner (Ciudadanos), Sandra Gómez (PSPV-PSOE) and Jaime Paulino (Podemos) will intervene. The debate was moderated by Adrián Todolí, co-director of the Collaborative Economy Chair and Javier Alfonso, director of 'València Plaza'.

In this debate the various candidates analysed the problems arising around the rental of tourist apartments and confronted ideas and proposals for municipal regulation of this economic activity. The housing rental platforms are increasing a social debate that joins that of gentrification in certain neighbourhoods of large cities. Therefore, this forum addressed issues such as the effect of digital platforms for rental of tourist properties on the cost of renting housing, municipal public housing parks, the consequences of this activity on trade and the neighbourhood of the most touristic neighbourhoods, the inspecting and sanctioning action of the administration, the regulation of prices or licenses, and so on.

The political representation arising from the next municipal elections will have to face the problems and challenges posed by the rental of tourist apartments. On 10 April, the candidates had the opportunity to express their opinion on this activity powered by digital platforms, explained how they consider it affects the right to decent housing and explained their proposals for regulation and how they will tackle the difficulties of citizens to access housing due to high rental prices.
