The Cultural Centre La Nau of the Universitat de València will host tomorrow, 20 December, the Faculty of Fine Arts Award of the Universitat Politècnica de València. The ceremony of the award, the Sant Carles medal, will be carried out at 19 h, at the Alfons Roig Assembly Hall of the Faculty of Fine Arts. Additionally, artist José María Yturralde will also be awarded at this event.

La Nau receives this award right a week after it was given the Medal for Fine Arts Services by the Reial Acadèmia de Belles Arts de Sant Carles (Saint Charles Royal Academy of Fine Arts of València.)

La Nau, flagship of the cultural policies of the Universitat

From their origins and throughout the centuries, universities have contributed to society’s advance as cultural spaces and they have been the historical centres for knowledge, culture and science transferring.

La Nau is the flagship of the cultural policies of the Universitat de València and it has become the most singular cultural space of the Universitat; it even has a continuous cultural programming for citizens. Organisations, cultural and civic organisations, while looking for alternative and rising models, foster all kinds of cultural activities with La Nau.

Lately, its work in the cultural area has been awarded by several entities. The historic “Cartelera Túria” granted the Award to best cultural contribution of the city of València to the Office of the Vice-principal for Culture in 2013.

La Nau received the Award of the magazine “Tendencias” in 2014 and L'ordre des Palmes académiques of the French Ministry of Culture for the support of the Universitat de València to French culture. The awards were given to the Vice-Principal for Culture and Equality, Antonio Ariño.

Apart from the awards of the cultural project La Nau, other cultural projects of the university have also been awarded. Several publications, images and exhibition catalogues stood out at the Awards of the Association of Designers of the Valencian Community, as well as other cultural projects: The Theatre Group of the Universitat de València was given the Avetid Award (Associació d’Empreses d’Arts Escèniques del País Valencià) and Erasmus Scene was awarded the European Charlemagne Youth Prize and was an honorary mention of “Pearle Live Performance Europe”.

In 1999, on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the Universitat de València, the historical building of La Nau was re-opened as a cultural space for the Valencian society after a full ambitious remodelling. The Head Office of the General Studies, whose classrooms have hosted hundreds of student generations since 1499, got into the 21st century as a contemporary cultural space with a special personality. 19 years later, the Cultural Centre La Nau has become the most unique cultural space of the University and has its own permanent cultural programme.
