From October 19th to 21st, the first edition of the International Conference Teaching with Comics will be held at the Teacher Training Faculty of the University of Valencia, organized by the Chair of Studies of Comic Books Foundation SM-University of Valencia, the Research Grup ELCIS and the Department of Didactics of Language and Literature.

The congress is the result of the growing interest from the academic field in the 'new art' with an educational methodology, reflected in a number of publications every time in prestigious academic journals, along with the appearance of books specifically dedicated to this topic, which demonstrate that the comic strips can supply any discipline, from Humanities to Sciences, as well as any educational stage, from Primary to University Higher Education.

The congress, directed by professors Noelia Ibarra and Álvaro M. Pons, presents through a hundred communications not only this interest, but the results and proposals of the research and work lines that have already been reported in different universities and educational institutions. With speakers coming from geographies as uneven as America, Europe or Asia, this event tries to create an academic space to reflect on the applications of comic books, which go beyond the educational space to enter into social intervention.

The University of Valencia has continued to be a pioneer in the study of comic book applications, being the first to have an institutional chair dedicated to comics and to present a master's degree in Education and Comic Books for the training of professors in the possibilities of comic books in the classrooms.

The congress includes plenary presentations from specialists of renowned reputation, including Nick Sousanis (San Francisco State University), Ana Merino (Iowa University) and Gino Frezza (Universita di Salerno), in addition to round tables dedicated to the presence of the comic books in the library, socio-educational intervention and authorial work, with the attendance of the National Comic Book awards Paco Roca, Cristina Durán and Miguel Ángel Giner.

The poster of the congress has been carried out by the artist Nadia Hafid, creator of pieces like Chacales or El buen padre. The Faculty of Teacher Training, the European action COST ICOn-MICs, the Foundation El Arte de Volar and the Center Micharmut of Studies and Preservation of the Heritage of the Comic Book, promoted by the University of Valencia and the Valencia City Hall, have collaborated in the congress organization.
