The University of Valencia approves the goal of 50% of teaching in valencian by 2021

The offer in the degrees for the 2021-22 academic year will have to be fair between the two official languages, with a coincident increase in teaching in English and in other foreign languages.

The Council of the Government of the University of Valencia has approved the rule for the elaboration of the academic offer for the academic year 2021-22, in which it has been approved that the number of teaching hours in Valencian in each degree program will not be less than 50% of the total not taught in a foreign language. The aim is to achieve the goal of linguistic equalization set out in 2012 in the Plan to increase teaching in Valencian, which stipulated a period of 10 years to progressively increase from 25% to 50%. The Plan has also made it possible to increase the number of courses offered in English and in other foreign languages, which stands at around 10%.

With this educational offer, the University consolidates itself as the most multilingual and, at the same time, the most egalitarian of the Valencian universities, since it is the one that takes into account the social and linguistic reality of Valencia, betting strongly on internationalization. For this reason, the UV has the goal to ensure that its graduates are able to work in at least three languages: Valencian, Spanish and English or another foreign language. In this sense, the criteria approved by the Council of the Government propose to progressively replace the monolingual groupings by multilingual groupings Valencian/Spanish and Valencian/Spanish/foreign language.

In order to help achieve the planned percentage of teaching in Valencian, the Vice-Rector's Office for Studies and Language Policy offers an economic incentive to the departments, in addition to the prizes for the linguistic quality of the teaching materials produced in Valencian and English. The Vice Chancellor, Isabel Vázquez, congratulated all the teaching staff who are contributing to the achievement of these objectives. The involvement of the teaching staff can also be seen in the improvement of competences: more than 62% of them already have an officially accredited level C1 or C2 of Valencian. And among the teaching staff helping doctoral and contracted doctoral students, the figure is close to 100%.
