The Universitat de València inaugurated on Wednesday the 22nd International Meeting of The Spanish Association of University Accounting Professors (ASEPUC), a scientific meeting that gathers researchers, professors, trainee researchers, and professionals in the field of accounting at the Faculty of Economics. The meeting is held from 10 to 12 June, under the theme ‘El papel de la información en la sociedad: nuevos retos para la disciplina contable’ (the role of information in society: new challenges for accounting).

The opening ceremony was leaded by the Principal of the Universitat de València, Juan Luis Gandia, along with the General Director of Science and Research of the Conselleria de Educación, Cultura y Universidades, Rafael Sebastián; the President of ASEPUC, Emma García; the Dean of the Faculty of Economics at the UV, Francisco Muñóz; and the Co-president of the meeting, Araceli Mora.

During his discourse, the Principal thanked the Faculty of Economics, the Department of Economics, both the organising and scientific committees, and the Generalitat Valenciana (Valencian Government) for holding this international meeting. In addition to his institutional responsibility, he remarked his personal connection with the association, to which he belongs since 1993 as professor of Accounting, and in whose governing council participated between 2016 and 2020.

The principal highlighted ASEPUC’s contribution to the consolidation of the university community of professors of Accounting in Spain, and their role in the promotion of spaces for research, reflection, and improvement of teaching. Likewise, he underlined the relevance of the theme selected for this edition, focused on the role that information plays in current societies and the need for guaranteeing its quality, utility, and credibility.

Accounting is facing new challenges due to the irruption of artificial intelligence, the diversity of the public, the more demanding regulations, and the technological transformation of data processing.

In this regard, he stated that accounting faces important challenges arisen out from the irruption of artificial intelligence, the growing diversity of the public, the more and more demanding regulatory frameworks, and technologies that are changing the processes of data generation and analysis. He added that these changes also have a direct impact on university teaching.

València, a meeting point to discuss the challenges of the discipline

During three one-day conferences, the Universitat de València is turning into a meeting point for academic discussion on the challenges faced by accounting in a context marked by digital transformation, sustainability, transparency, and society’s new requests for information. The programme includes plenary sessions, research presentations, discussion tables, and activities aimed at promoting cooperation between university, the accounting profession, and other agents linked to the economic and financial field. In total, there will be 140 communications and more than 250 people attending the event.

Organised by the Department of Accounting at the Universitat de València, the meeting constitutes one of the main scientific forums of accounting in Spain, and it gathers specialists from national and international universities and institutions.

The congress was preceded by the ASEPUC 2026 Doctoral Colloquium, held on 9 and 10 June, which is an initiative aimed at promoting the research training and development of the doctorate students.
During the following days, the different sessions will allow to share research progress and to reflect on the role played by accounting information towards social, technological, and regulatory changes that affect organisations and institutions.

The meeting will finish on Friday 12 with a closing conference, given at 1.30 p.m. by Santiago Durán, President of the Instituto de Contabilidad y Auditoría de Cuentas (ICAC), at the Assembly Hall of the Gregori Maians Library. After that, at 2 p.m., the closing ceremony will take place, leaded by the principal of the Universitat de València.
