The UV will remember Principal Peset this Monday on the 80th anniversary of his execution.

An institutional ceremony in the University Senate will commemorate the former rector of the University of Valencia on Monday 24 May, the 80th anniversary of his execution. The event, with limited capacity, will be in broadcast live by the University. The Office of the Principal of the University of Valencia has initiated a procedure of reparation for the people repressed by Franco’s regime and will hold an event, with the Minister of Universities, at the end of this year.

Juan Bautista Peset Alexandre was full university professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Valencia, where he had studied, with a brilliant academic record, different academic titles, including doctoral studies in Medicine, Sciences (Chemistry section) and Law.

He was Dean of the Faculty of Medicine between 1930 and 1931, Vice-Principal of the University of Valencia from 1931, and in 1932 he was elected Principal. He held this position until 1934, when his resignation was accepted.

In 1936 he was elected deputy for Valencia and took part in the last session of the Cortes of the Republic in Spain in 1939. He was arrested in the port of Alicante when he tried to go into exile.

He was removed from his professorship on 29 July 1939 for his “disaffection” with the Franco regime, court-martialled twice in 1940 and shot in Paterna on 24 May 1941.

In 2001, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of his execution, the University of Valencia published the book “Proceso a Juan Peset Aleixandre” and a facsimile reproduction of the case file of his trial.

On the 80th anniversary of his execution, the University of Valencia will remember Principal Peset in a ceremony in the University Senate presided over by the Principal.

At the end of this year the Principal and the Minister of Universities will preside over an act of reparation for the people who were repressed at the end of the Civil War, including Rector Peset, once the proceedings initiated by the Office of the Principal of the University with the Spanish government have been completed.
