The Universitat de València celebrates, as every year, the International Day of Women with a a wide programme of cultural and didactic activities which will start for some days before the 8th of March, the day of the commemoration, and they will last several weeks.

The institutional ceremony is programmed on the 6th of March at 6.00 p.m. in the Cultural Centre La Nau.  After reading the institutional Manifesto, the professor of Constitutional Law and director of the Centre of Polical and Constitutional Studies, Yolanda Sánchez, will give the speech ‘Woman and Constitution’ At 7.30 p.m. in the Capella de la Sapiència, the choir of women ‘A cau d’Orella’ will give a special concert on the occasion of the International Women’s Day.  Thereafter, the exhibition ‘Self Made Women’ of Concha Ros will be inaugurated in the Sala Oberta and over 9.00 p.m. there will be a performance called ‘Kalidoscopica’ of María Tamarit in the cloister of the Cultural Centre La Nau.

Campaign #StopCallaBonica #StopCallaBonita

The schedule of ‘Març per la Igualtat’ has started today, on 1st of March, in the Faculty of Philology, Traslation and Communication (FFTiC) with the launch of the campaign #StopCallaBonica #StopCallaBonita. These Hashtags, which could be translated as ‘Stopkeepyourmothclosedbaby’, have been created to report situations of linguistic micromachismos through the social media.  In the hallway of the first floor of this Faculty, there is an exhibition called ‘Un món sense dones = un món incomplet’, headed by the lecturer Isadora Guardia and the students of the degree in Audiovisual Communication.  The exhibition will be open until the 31st of March of 2019.

The Universitat de València will give the Medal of the Universitat de València to Carme Valls, initiator of the study of medicine from a gender perspective, on the 4th of March.  The academic ceremony will start at 12.00 in the hall of La Nau.  The ceremony will be headed by the principal, Mavi Mestre, and the ‘laudatio’ will be read by Josep Lluís Barona, professor of Science History and Documentation.

Science and Gender Conferences

The Spanish Society of Astronomy organises some Conferences on Science and Gender, which will take place on the 4th and the 5th of March in València and the Universitat will be the host of some of the ceremonies, in particular, on the 4th of March in the afternoon at the Faculty of Philology, Translation and Communication and on Thursday 5th of March in the Aula Magna of the Cultural Centre La Nau.

Monica Oltra will chair the inauguration of the conferences on the 4th of March at 4.15 p.m. at the Faculty of Philology, Translation and Communication.

The conferences include two activities open to the general public. Angela Saini, a British science journalist, writer, communicator and the author of Geek Nation, will present her last book, ‘Inferior’ on Monday. ‘Inferior’ deals with the problem of the underestimation of women in science and the way in which the research activity rewrites the history.  

On Tuesday 5th of March, a roundtable, called ‘The scientific career of women’ will be celebrated. It will be conducted by Teresa Riesgo, general director of Research, Development and Innovation in the Ministry; Maria Dolores Real, vice-principal for Innovation and Transfer of the Universitat de València; Rafael Rebolo and Casiana Muñoz-Tuñón, director and deputy director of IAA; Maria Luisa García, of FRACTAL SLNE; and Francesaca Figueras, lecturer of the Universitat de Barcelona and president of the Spanish Society of Astronomy.

In the afternoon at 7.00, Dava Sobel, reporter, an American writer and science communicator will close the conferences with the speech ‘The crystal universe’.  The story of Harvad Women, which neared us to the stars’.  Both will be simultaneously translated.  The web site of the conferences and the complete schedule is: http://cienciaygenero.uv.es/

Faculty of Physiotherapy organises special events on the occasion of the International Women Day for another year.  ‘The building of inequality and the path towards it in the UV’ is the speech which will be given by Amparo Mañés Barbé, director of the Equality Unit, on the next 6th of March up to 10.30.  ‘The more equality, the more freedom and happiness’ given by the clown school ‘L@s Hij@s de Augusto’ will conclude the event.

‘Women and scientific leadership today’

The III Jornada de la Dona Científica, ‘Women and scientific leadership today’ will be celebrated the on the next Thursday, the 7th of March in the Assembly hall of the main building of the ‘Parc Científic’. The speeches will be given by Esther Rodríguez Blanco, responsible for the encouragement activities of the European Office of the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and the State Secretary of R+D+i, Paola Ferrario, a researcher member of the Basc Foundation for Science, Ikerbasque, Mónica Bolufer Peruga, professor of the Universitat the València, of the Department of Modern and Contemporary History, Carmen Agustín Pavón, assistant lecturer of the Universitat de València of Cellular Biology, Functional Biology and Anthropology.  

In the conferences, Josefina Bueno Alonso, general director of University Research and Science; Begoña Milian Medina, vice dean of the Faculty of Chemistry; and Amparo Mañes Barbé, director of the Equality Unit of the Univesitat de València.  The principal María Vicente Mestre Escrivá will close the conferences.  

On the 7th of March in the afternoon, at 6.00 p.m. there will be a university conference organised by the Equality Committee of Blasco Ibánez where the Report ‘Sombra al GREVIO’ will be presented due to the agreement of Istanbul against the gender-based violence.  Federico Buyolo, director of the Office of the High Commission of the Spanish Government for 2030, will participate in the ceremony, which will take place in the Room Palinero of the Faculty of Geography and History.

Over the whole week, the Faculty of Philology, Translation and Communication has a wide schedule. On Wednesday, the 6th of March at 12.00 p.m., the Recital of ‘Spoken Word with Mississippi and a performance of Body Paint on the occasion of AriBodyArt. 

On the 7th of March at 10 a.m. in the hall, the Performance Kellys, organised by the students of the degree in Audiovisual Communication; at 12.00 p.m. in the Cultural Building a speech on ‘María Moliner in València (1930-1946)’ organised by Mercedes Quillis and Mª José Martínez Alcalde and at 8.00 p.m. a concert given by Carolina Otero, philologist, poet and musician, will be carried out.  On Friday, the 8th of March up to 10 a.m., a workshop on literary banners and signs will be undertaken in this hall.

Faculty of Social Sciences offers a wide programmation over the whole month whose title is ‘Thanks to women, we will be free’.  From Tuesday on, the 5th of March, there will be a flea market and some workshops of Femisnisme Gràfic, Activistes Valencianes, etc.

On Tuesday, 5th of March,  the first session of the I Jornada Dones i Treball(s) en el Territori will take place. ‘From the French Women from Senija to the ‘estisoradores’ from Benissa’ at the assembly hall of the Faculty of Social Sciences at 11:00 a.m.   The second session will be on Thursday, March 7th, ‘The ‘espigolaores’: memories of the Valencian fields’.

On Wednesday, at 10:00 a.m., at the terrace of the Faculty of Social Sciences there will be an intervention ‘Women and Sports: Overthrowing gender-based inequality. Fencing lessons’, by Laura Pérez Aguado, member of the Club d’Esgrima.

At the Manuela Ballester hall of the Faculty of Social Sciences, from the 7th of March until the 5th of April, people will be able to visit the exhibition ‘(Ó)bulos’, by  Antonia Carbonell, Nora Pastor, Carmen Cebrián and Pepa Arróniz.

On the 12th of March at the Faculty of Social Sciences, there will be two interventions ‘¿Acaso no soy mujer?’ by Vivian Ntih and ‘Buscando a mi yo’.

On the 21st of March, in the Assembly Hall of the Faculty of Social Sciences, at 3.30 p.m., there will be a cinema forum ‘Parts of the reality of Refugee and Exiled Women’. Exiled, places of memory and peace’ by La Colectiva de Mujeres Refugiadas, Exiliadas y Migradas.  Then, the performance ‘Rompiendo el silencio desde el exilio. Aportes para la memoria y la construcción de la paz con enfoque de género’ will be carried out In the Faculty of Social Sciences.  

To end with, on the 26th of March, the attendants could enjoy a musical piece of interdisciplinary dance and on the 28th of March there will be a performance of the group Magnadalenes València.  Teatre de les oprimides in the Faculty of Social Sciences, too.

The Faculty of Economics gives the 6th Equality Award of the Faculty of Economy ‘Igualtat i Xarxes Socials’, the award of the first contest of gender-based publications of the Faculty of Economics and, finally, to conclude the ceremony there will be a concert of string instruments given by women. 

On the 21st of March the + Dones 2019 award ceremony is scheduled and it will take place in the School of Engineering (ETSE); the conference:  ‘Men facing prostitution’ given by the actress and the filmmaker Mabel Lozano will be carried out on the 26th of March in the Faculty of Psychology; and the roundtable ‘Gender and Teaching’ by Paula Tuzón, Helena Rausell, Miquel Oltra, Marta Pla in the room 4.04. of the Faculty of Teacher Training.  

The lecturer Ana Marrades leaders the training course ‘Women and Constitution’, which 
is carried out in the Cultural Centre La Nau since the 28th of February and where the proposal of constitutional reform from a feminist perspective will be presented. 
In this training course a constitutional reform will be analysed from a  
feminist perspective The sessions will be carried out on the 6th, 21st and 28th of March and the 
conferences are open to the general public.

Like every year, the Aula de Cinema, the Aula de Múscia and the Aula de Arts Escèniques have scheduled a special programmation on the occasion of the International Women Day.  The activities organised in the different campus will continue during March and April.
