More than 300 students from different degrees linked to healthcare that are imparted in the Universitat de València will participate on Saturday 21 of April in the 12th Health Fair. It will be opened from 9 a.m. to 20 p.m. in the Plaza de la Virgen on the occasion of the World Health Day. The event is organised by the Valencian Medical Students Association (AVEM) of the University. Medicine, odontology, Pharmacy and Physiotherapy students will participate in the event. As every year, seats were run out in 10 minutes. Medecins Sans Frontieres, the Official College of Doctors and the Red Cross will participate in the events.

During the session, students and professionals will be in tens of tents that aim to promote healthy habits, inform about the most important health problems nowadays and explain how to get the profession closer to society. The tents will have specific themes and will offer information, advice and activities. Several initiatives will take place in the tents such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques, activities for old people, sign language, dermatological examination, sugar and blood pressure measurements, a dental workshop, ophthalmologic tests, sexuality and STI prevention workshops, and alcoholism and drug use prevention, among others. The initiative of Hospital d’Ossets, which is addressed to children, stands out. It tries to bring medicine and its procedures closer to them, so that they will lose fear and mistrust towards doctors.

As every year, the event is expected to gather a thousand people.

Not all activities will be related to medicine. On Saturday 21 on the afternoon, several activities have been organised, such as zumba. For the first time, this year an award will be given to the best tent of the 12th Health Fair. People who participate in the fair will be asked to vote.  In addition, as every year, a magazine edited by students will be distributed for the occasion.

“One of the purposes of the projects consists in searching training and critical thinking to deconstruct the reality of the health area in society and help to develop it” explains the President of AVEM, Mª Isabel Garrido. The Vice-president of AVEM, Josep Chorro, remembers that a more that decade after its first inauguration “the fair represents a good opportunity for students to be in contact with patients in a comfortable and relaxed environment, far from hospitals and health centres.
