  • October 8th, 2021

On Fridays in October, you can visit the Mercat Agroecològic of the Universitat de València at the Blasco Ibáñez Campus. It includes local, ecological or fair trade products for promoting sustainable food consumption among the university community.

The space between the lecture rooms I and III of the Blasco Ibáñez Campus of the university will host the Mercat Agroecològic of the Universitat de València during October. The Mercat consists of two stalls selling fruit and vegetables from local productors, another with nearby and ecological products and from little artisans, an oil stall, a familiar home-made bakery stall and another with fair trade products. The Mercat is fruit of the collaboration between the Office of the Vice-Principal for Equality, Diversity and Sustainability, UV Sustainability, l'Horta Chair, the Naves, the Chair for Economy of Common Good and the Faculty of Nursing and Podiatry.

The Mercat will take place during this pilot experience on Fridays 8, 15, 22 and 29 October thanks to the collaboration and support of the Dean of the Faculty of Nursing and Podiatry and the Dean of the Campus, Antoni Merelles.

According to its reception and participation, new dates will be proposed and its expansion to other campuses will be studied.

Next, the Principal of the Universitat de València, M. Vicenta Mestre, and the Manager of the Naves, Marta Chillarón, have presented the guide Iniciativas de consumo alimentario sostenible en la UV.

Sergio Belda, Doctor in Local Development and International Cooperation and coauthor of the guide, has presented this work in which the initiatives to transform food consumption habits at the University towards more sustainable and healthy models are described. These take into account the most respectful to the environment local and in-season products and cultivation methods.

This Guide and the Mercat entail a further step to the commitment of the Universitat for bringing closer the convenience of adopting healthier and more sustainable consumption habits to the university community, taking into account the origin, the production method and the carbon footprint of the products we consume.
