Mavi Mestre and Vicent J. Martínez compete in runoff elections for the Office of the Principal of the Universitat de València

Mavi Mestre y Vicent J. Martínez will compete for the Office of the Principal of the Universitat de València in the runoff elections. In the elections of February 22, Mavi Mestre obtained 43.17% of the pondered votes. Vicent J. Martínez got 36.76% of the votes. In third place, María Antonia García Benau obtained 20.07% of the votes. Runoff elections will take place on March 6.

Results are provisional. The Electoral Commission will announce the final results on Wednesday 28 of February.

Mavi Mestre was the favourite among tenured professors with 22.34% of their votes. Vicent J. Martínez has obtained 17.64% and María Antonia García Benau got 11.01%.  Mavi Mestre got 5.30% of non-tenured professors’ votes, Vicent J. Martínez obtained 5.08% and María Antonia García Benau achieved a 2.30%. Results among the members of the trainee research staff are: Vicent J. Martínez (0.72%), Mavi Mestre (0.47%) and María Antonia García Benau (0.14%).

Mavi Mestre was the favourite among students with 11.48% of the pondered vote, followed by Vicent J. Martínez with 9,15% and María Antonia García Benau with 4,36%. Finally, Vicent J. Martínez was the favourite among administrative staff with 4.16% of the votes. He was followed by Mavi Mestre with 3.58% and María Antonia García Benau with 2.26%.

Over 55,000 people were asked to vote in the elections. 83.48% of tenured professors (2.010 people) have voted. 38.80% of non-tenured professors (2.750) have voted.  42.11% of the 437 trainee research staff members have voted. Undergraduate and Master’s Degree students (47.907) have registered a participation of 8%. 66.93% of administrative staff (2.150) has voted. Results are calculated by a pondered voting system. Following the article 101 of the Statutes of the Universitat de València, the election of the Principal is done through direct voting and universal, free and secret suffrage. Vote is pondered depending on the sector of the University Community as it follows:

a) Doctors permanently linked to the University have 51% of the total value of votes.

b) Votes from non-doctor professors or professors without a permanent link to university count 12.67%.

c) Student votes count 25%.

d) Votes from the administrative staff count 10%.

e) Votes from trainee research staff count 1.33%.

Under this article, the candidate who obtains an absolute majority of pondered votes in the first round will be proclaimed Principal of the Universitat de València.  In case an absolute majority is not obtained, runoff elections are held.
