Tourism and climate change

Climate change is an environmental concern that also negatively affects the tourism industry. Popular destinations face issues arising from fresh water scarcity, forest fires, the extinction of species, extreme heatwaves and extreme weather conditions. These factors can deter travellers, thus, affecting the local economy.

The19thInternational Colloquium on TourismGeography AGE-UGIfocused on reflecting on the latest research and strategies to improve the adaptation of tourist destinations to climate change.

The organisers of the colloquium state that ‘the tourism industry can lead the fight against climate change through sustainability. This is not only about reducing negative impacts, but also about seizing opportunities to positively contribute to environmental, social and economic solutions.’

Adapting to new climate dynamics is essential for the future of tourism. Events such as the 19thInternational Colloquium on TourismGeography AGE-UGI promote collaboration and innovation in the industry to ensure sustainable and viable tourism in the long term.
