Diversity congress

The Clinics of the University of Valencia along with Lambda (lesbian, gay, transgender and bisexual people organisation) have organised this congress which aim is to study in depth the diversity and social inclusion of this group from a professional perspective.

The open ceremony has been held at the assembly hall of the Faculty of Psychology and it has been presided by the rector of the University, Mª Vicenta Mestre; the general director of the Valencian Organisation of Equality in Diversity, José de Lamo; Lambda secretary Maria Jarga; the director of the Lluís Alcanyís Foundation, José Manuel Almerich; and the dean of the Faculty of Psychology, Mª Dolores Sancerní.

The rector, Mª Vicenta Mestre, chose to begin her speech with a reminder of how necessary it is for the public bodies to guarantee the rights and liberties of all people, regardless of their sexual orientation. In that context, she has praised the work carried out by the Conselleria d’Igualtat i Polítiques Inclusives. “The University will always be on the side of public bodies to overcome this challenge”, emphasised Mestre.

General director of the Agència Valenciana d’Igualtat en la Diversitat has reminded that the situation of this group has fortunately changed a lot in the last year, “but there is still a lot of work to do for full inclusion”. De Lamo asserted his wish that these conferences and training programmes were included within the syllabus so that they could reach every student and keep them involved in the cause.

On her part, Lambda secretary Maria Jarga has acknowledged the implication of the Faculty of Physchology, the University and the Lluís Alcanyís Foundation in this subject. She hopes for the conference to be interesting and useful in the development of the professionals involved.

“The Clinics of the University are very involved in paying attention to those in disadvantage”, has pointed out José Manuel Almerich,  “as it is in our ideology and values to offer a public service that assists in inclusion and equality within our society”.

In the end, dean Mª Dolores Sancerni has declared that the Faculty of Phycology has and will always be sensible to diversity issues because “our aim as a society is the peaceful coexistence of all people”.
