On Thursday 30 September, the presentation of the first edition of this new postgraduate course took place. This is the first postgraduate degree in the Valencian Community focused entirely on the study, diagnosis and design of strategies related to the fight against the climate change. Classes will start next week and they will have a hybrid format, combining face-to-face and online classes.

The presentation of the first edition of the Specialisation Diploma about Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability which will take place in Gandia during this school year 2021/2022 was on the 30th in the evening. In total, twenty-five people have enrolled in this pioneering degree that will enable them to obtain basic knowledge about environmental sustainability and climate change, attending to both urban territories and rural spaces and paying special attention to the Mediterranean environment. The degree directors, Carme Melo and Luís del Romero, have been in charge of explaining to the students the syllabus they will follow on the next weeks as well as other organisational information to take into account. Both Melo and Del Romero are professors of the Department of Geography of the Universitat de València. Additionally, Carme Melo is the director of the Gandia International Centre of the UV, head office of this degree.

We need to take into account that climate change is one of the most important challenges that humanity's present and future is facing. In the last months, it has been pushed into the background due to the covid-19 crisis, although it is known that there are several connections between pandemic and climate change. Therefore, this new postgraduate course brings up the need of changes in the ways of production and consumption towards sustainable alternatives which strain the capitalism as a hegemonic sociocultural and economic system.

This degree will last 30 ECTS. Classes will start next week and they will take place in a face-to-face version on Wednesdays and online on Thursdays. Teaching will go on until July 2022 and it will end with a fieldwork as well as with the realisation of an applied project in collaboration with public administrations, companies and civil society groups.
