The Principal of the Universitat de València, Mª Vicenta Mestre, has met with the Vice-president of the Valencian Government and Regional Minister for Equality and Inclusive Policies, Mónica Oltra. The meeting took place at the Català de Valeriola Palace, which is the Head office of the Valencian Government.

Several representatives assisted to the event, such as the Vice-dean for Innovation and Transference, Mª Dolores Real; the Vice-dean for Equality, Diversity and Sustainability, Elena Martínez; the Dean of the Faculty of Economics, José Manuel Pastor; and the director of the chair in Feminist Economics, Mº Luisa Moltó.

Mª Vicenta Mestre remarked the importance of the Chair in Feminist Economics because it is necessary to disseminate the gender perspective in all the society, so that our society becomes more egalitarian and inclusive. “Only education can establish respect in our society, and therefore put an end to chauvinist violence,” stated Mestre.

Regarding diversity, Mestre has also demanded a larger funding to promote this type of initiatives. The Principal has highlighted that the Universitat de València counts with more than a thousand students with disabilities and that they need more resources to meet the needs of functional diversity.

“Our University must be an example to society in terms of inclusion and equality. This is the reason why our institution has created several gender studies subjects that are linked to different fields of knowledge, so that future professionals will be educated in gender issues,” indicated Mª Vicenta Mestre.

The Vice-president of the Valencian Government, Mónica Oltra, detailed that part of the programme of the first edition of the Summer School that is organised by the Chair of Feminist Economics. The School is born for contributing to the critical thinking by disseminating the principles of feminist economics as an alternative to guide the economy towards a more human, fair and sustainable model.

The Vice-president Mónica Oltra has remarked that the Feminist Economic Summer School that will be opened to the general public on 25 June aims to remove chauvinist behaviours in society in order to make society more equal.  “The society has improved a lot in the past years. However, there is still a long way to go to,” has reminded the Regional Minister for Equality and Inclusive Policies.

The Principal has also congratulated the Vice-president for the great work carried out during the docking of the ship Aquarius and the assistance to the people on-board. “I am proud that the name of the Universitat de València appears in this context. I am also proud that the Universitat de València was able to participate in this task,” stated Mestre.

The Universitat de València and the Valencian Department for Sustainable Economics, Productive Sectors, Trade and Employment of the Valencian Government participate in the Chair of Feminist Economics. It will carry out several activities of education, research and divulgation in order to incorporate the gender perspective in the studies, the analysis and the application of Economics in the Valencian Community.
