The University of Valencia will host next Saturday September 12 the II Matinal Mathemàtiques per Matemàtiques, an informative experience where two women experts in the field with a wide academic and research background such as Xaro Nomdedéu and Marta Macho will explain the great contributions of female mathematicians whose trajectory has not been properly recognised. This conference will be held in online format through a videoconference service based on Blackboard Collaborate Ultra, a platform launched by the Computing Service of the University of Valencia. Registration is open until September 11 at: https://ir.uv.es/zhy7VFj.

The aim of the II Morning Session Mathemàtiques per Matemàtiques [M]2. [Mathematics told by female mathematicians] is to create a space where you can talk about mathematics and make known the advances that are being made in this branch of science, in a simple and informative way. The lectures will be moderated by María García Monera, professor at the Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Valencia.

Thus, Marta Macho Stadtler (Bilbao, 1962), professor at the University of the Basque Country-Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea (UPV / EHU) and PhD in Mathematics from the Claude Bernard University of Lyon (France) will explain in her paper “Some hidden figures” the key role of six women born between 1910 and 1930 who worked with well-known mathematicians and made very relevant contributions, but who continue to be“ hidden figures”. These are Esther Szekeres, Márta Svéd, Katherine Johnson (who inspired the title of this lecture), Mary Ellen Rudin, María Josefa Wonenburger and Vera T. Sós.

Xaro Nomdedéu Moreno (Castellón, 1948), professor of Mathematics since 1972 who has taught in secondary and university education, will explain in her lecture “Matenigmáticas” (‘enigmatic mathematicians’) why September 12 is an important day for two social constructions of knowledge: the calendar and decryption of the Nazi Enigma machine. The expert will talk about Joan Murray, Joan Clarke, Jane Hughes, Mavis Batey, Margaret Rock and Ruth Briggs, women who solved the problem alongside Alan Turing. The context that made possible the programming activity of these women and the concealment of their successes will also be described.

Marta Macho has been involved in various activities in universities, scientific institutions, cultural and educational centres for many years. She collaborates in different media, such as the program La mecànica del caracol on Radio Euskadi or the Network of Communicating Female Scientists of El Periódico in collaboration with the Esteve Foundation. She is the editor of the blog Mujeresconciencia of the Chair of Scientific Culture of the UPV / EHU.

Xaro Nomdedéu has been a mathematics consultant at the Castellón Teachers’ Centre and director of the Castellón Planetarium. She has also held various positions on the Board of Directors of the Spanish Organisation for Mathematical Coeducation (OECOM “Ada Byron”) and has researched and written on women in science. She is the author and co-author of several books and numerous articles on practical teaching of mathematics, co-education and mathematics, resources, and materials in the mathematics classroom.

The II Morning Session Matemàtiques per Matemàtiques [M]2. [Mathematics told by women mathematicians] is an activity that is part of the Dissemination Plan of the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit of the University of Valencia which has the support of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECyT ), in addition to the Ministry of Science and Innovation.

The schedule for this morning session will be as follows:
10.30 am Presentation by María Garcia Monera, professor at the Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Valencia.
11.00 am Lecture by Xaro Nomdedèu Moreno
12.00 pm Lecture by Marta Macho
13.00 pm Question Time.
