The relationships between feminism and maternity will be debated at the Universitat de València

Is maternity a pleasant experience or a trap which generates gender gaps? Does feminism defend an empowered maternity? Which joint responsibility models exist in Europe when it comes to facing the assistance to descendants while avoiding the negative impact on the workplace? Some of these questions will be answered in the debate ‘Feminist reflections on maternity’ which takes places on Thursday 23 February at 18:30 in the Cultural Centre La Nau of the Universitat de València.

The debate is incorporated into the series ‘La Nau de la Igualtat’ which is an space for debating on the key elements of the feminist thought with the purpose of progressing in order to achieve more agreed positions which benefit the fight and the social achievements on equality.

The debate will take place in the Paranymph. It will count on the participation of Ana Marrades, Law professor in the Universitat de València and author of the book ‘Luces y sombras del derecho a la maternidad’ (Lights and shadows of the right to maternity), Patricia Merino Murga, anthropologist and author of the book ‘Maternidad, Igualdad, Fraternidad’ (Maternity, Equality, Fraternity) and María Lozano Estivalis, journalist and professor of the Department of Education in the Unversitat Jaume I.

She is also the author of ‘Mujeres autónomas, madres automáticas’ (Autonomous women, automatic mothers) and ‘La maternidad en escena: mujeres, reproducción y representación cultural’ (Maternity on stage: women, reproduction and cultural representation). Finally, the psychologist Sara Jort will speak. She is graduate in psychology by the UV and Gestalt psychotherapist. The debate will be moderate by Berta Chulvi, journalist and Doctor in Social Psychology in the UV.

The debate will answer some of the following questions: Does a feminist maternity exist? What do feminists think of the natural childbirth, the breastfeeding or the attachment parenting? Is it naturalist offensive? Is it Women empowering? The round table is formed by four feminist women with several opinions and positioning in order to enrich the debate and promote reflection on that subject.
