A joint conference of Sami Naïr and Javier de Lucas will start, this Thursday 1 June, the sessions of the III International Congress MULTIHURI about human rights, diversity and cohabitation, which will take place at the Faculty of Law of the Universitat de València, Both professors will make considerations about the limits of politics and the right to identity recognition.

Prestigious Spanish and international researchers will explore during two days the issues related to the cultural identities, racism and xenophobia, rights to health and education as well as the relationship between genre and diversity. In addition to that, there will be some leaflets and posters in relation to these topics within the migratory context of Spain, France, Italy, United Kingdom and Canada.

According to the researcher of the Institute for Human Rights of the Universitat de València and director of the congress, Àngeles Solanes, “every day the identity challenges of the diversity are more urgent. Their link with the public order and the fundamental principles of the modern democratic rules of law (such as equality, pluralism and laicism) and their relation with latent feeling such as the national acceptance, reveal the difficulties when establishing common values in a divided world”. She also adds that the bad management of the cultural disparity, including the religious one, “causes breakups that encourage terrorist acts from racism and xenophobia”. Furthermore, “they have a feeling of identity and belonging conceived in a tone of incompatibility and confrontation”.

On the other hand, she also insisted that these challenges are face with reductionist solutions based on the fear of one another. These promote the division instead of the social cohesion. “Against these potential conflicts that lead to the drastic reduction of freedom, it is necessary to think about the demands of the logic of recognition which requires a great deal of effort in helping to the negotiation and integration of the opposite interests, from the perspective of the human rights”.

In order to avoid a setback based on the inequality, “it is important to consider how possible is to build a pacific cohabitation model in plural and diverse societies, marked by migratory flows”. An unavoidable guide for the promotion of social cohesion and political articulation “is the respect to the human rights from its international standards and basic principles of the rule of law and democracy”.
