Sami Naïr and other two foreign researchers join the Institute of Human Rights

The French political scientist has joint the Institute of Human Rights of the Universitat de València (IDH) as guest researcher. The Finnish Mari K. Niemi and the Brazilian Vinicius Cardeal, both grant holders by their respective governments, have also joint the IDH these days. The incorporation of these three researchers ‘is a sample of the international appeal and the researcher potential which represents the IDH’, according to its director, the professor Javier de Lucas.

Sami Naïr, Doctor Honoris Causa by the Universitat de València, is a political expert, philosopher, sociologist and full university professor at the Sorbonne, specialists on migrant movements and creator of the concept co-development. Between 1997 and 199 he was advisor of the Government of Lionel Jospin and, until 2004, member of the European Parliament. He is a full university professor of Political Sciences, director of the Centro Mediterráneo Andalusí (CMA) and professor and researcher at the Universidad Pablo de Olavide of Sevilla. He directed ‘Les Temps Modernes’, with Simone de Beauvoir and ‘L’Evenément européen’, with Edgar Pisani.

The visiting researcher Mari K. Niemi is doctor in Social Sciences and nowadays she works as researcher in the Centre for Parliamentary Studies of the University of Turku (Finland).  Niemi studies issues related to media and politics, political communication, populism and populist parties, as well as women leadership in politics. During her stay, she will work together with the professor Ángeles Solanes. Vinicius Cardeal, pre-doctorate researcher, comes from the Laboratory of Human Rights of the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro. He will work with the professor Javier de Lucas in the study of compared immigration policies (Brazil, EU and Spain).

The professor Sami Nair will join during two months and a half the IDH, thanks to a grant of the guest professor programme of the Office of the Vice-principal for Research of the Universitat de València. During this period, the professor Naïr will develop together with the professor de Lucas a research project about the problems of cross-culture and integration of immigrants and refugees. He will also collaborate in the teaching activities of the IDH. On 12 May, he will give the closing conference of the International Seminar of Labour policies and Inclusion. It will be about the State and the labour market reform in Europe. On 1st June, he will give together with Javier de Lucas the opening conference of the 3rd Multihuri International Congress. They will speak about the limits of the Law and the politics and the recognition of identity. On 7 June, he will close the current edition of the Master's Degree in Human Rights, Democracy and International Justice with the conference ‘Geopolitics of the Mediterranean: the complexity of the claimant’s role in the Syrian case’. Moreover, the professor Nair will give two classes in the Double Degree in Law and Political Sciences on 16 and 17 May. He will also give two seminars for Master’s degree and Doctorate students on 25 May and 5 June.
