On Saturday, 18th of May, the Botanical Garden of the Universitat de València has two reasons to celebrate: it is the International Fascination of Plants Day and the Museums Day. The Garden, a big plants museum, shows its content through collections that gather the object of conservation, study, admiration and fascination. For this reason the Garden has prepared activities which are the opportunity to get closer to the collections of the Garden, not only the plants in the outdoor garden but also the ones that usually are guarded by the staff in order to be available for the scientific community, as the herbarium and the germplasm bank.

Furthermore, we will be able to discover the associations and entities that are born and are dedicated to be fascinated for plants. In the fair organised by the Garden, where we will discover what do they do and in some cases we will be able to attend to a demonstration or workshop, will be present the ‘Asociación Botánica Española de Palmeras y Cicas’ (ABEPYC), the ‘Asociación de orquidiófilos valencianos’ (OVAL), the ‘Amigos de los cactus y suculentas’ (ACYS), the ‘Asociación Llavors d’Ací’, the ‘Asociación española de jardinería ecológica’, the Regional Ministry for Agriculture, Environment, Climate Change and Rural Development, the Desertification Research Centre (CIDE), and the ‘Asociación española de la rosa’ (AEROSA).

Meanwhile, children could attend activities organised by “Acorquevols Animació”, in which they will pick up leaves and elements in the garden. Thereafter, they will use them to make an artistic creation that they could take to their homes once they have experienced with textures.  A free event to vindicate the importance of the plant kingdom while we enjoy an exciting day outside, surrounded by those who are passionate for plants.

The International Fascination of Plants Day is an activity which has been celebrated since 2015, supported by the European Plant Science Organisation (EPSO) and Global Plant Council. This year counts with the participation of 47 countries around the world.  Some scientific institutions, such as universities, botanical gardens, research centre, museum, etc., have organised activities opened for all audiences in order to make known the basic role of the plant kingdom in agriculture, sustainable production, forest management, pharmaceutical industry development, paper, energy, etc., as well as the importance of biodiversity conservation.  In conclusion, according EPSO, it consists in making virtual seeds grow in the minds of people who know the plant science is absolutely relevant fot our present and our future.
