Since January 2021, 234 consultations have been attended by the student counselling service. It is a free psychological, sexological, psychoeducational and legal counselling service for students at the University of Valencia managed by the SeDi Information and Promotion Service.

The most frequent reasons for seeking for psychological, sexological and psycho-educational counselling are related to anxiety, poor performance in studies, self-demand and self-esteem. Issues related to situations of falling out of love, loneliness, sadness and problems of adaptation have also been consulted. As for legal advice, renting a home is the main reason for consultation, followed by civil matters, administrative claims (grants, academic procedures), nationality and employment issues.

It should be noted that most of the users of the counselling services from January to April were women (74%) and 1st years students. In addition, since the start of the pandemics, the counselling centres have been providing online services, and the most frequent means of counselling has been by videoconference (62%), followed by telephone (28%) and, lastly, e-mail (10%).

The data is treated confidentially. The specialist staff will directly contact the applicant and arrange a first appointment, generally within 7 - 10 days of the request. Depending on the individual’s needs, a maximum number of sessions is set. Moreover, if psychological, sexological and psycho-educational counselling indicates that the situation needs to be addressed therapeutically, referral to the appropriate public health services is indicated.

From the legal counselling service, a team of legal professionals offers university students advice on legal matters and information on the legal channels that may allow them to overcome a conflict. For example, issues related to flat renting, employment, claims and appeals to public administrations, business management, benefits, family situations, taxes, etc. can be consulted.
